Day 2
Friday the 13th we were up before 6am, nerves? Excitement? Hangovers? Who knows, but today was the day we climb Sani pass. It was very fresh outside, our bike had a layer of ice on them, the lodge was still dead quiet, the movies stars still fast asleep. Their sleep was about to be interrupted by a fellow German cranking over and roaring to life, mainly so we could see what the temperature was.  It was -1
We packed our things and headed off back the 25 km we had come the previous night to Winterton for breakfast,  temperatures hovered around the -1 level for most of the way back, the roads looked somewhat wet, and at these temperatures that would mean icy, I don’t think I have ever ridden so cautiously.

After a hearty breakfast and a chat to some of the locals who were very interested as to where we were going in this cold and how crazy they thought we were, we hit the road.

The Route was mapped out, stick as close as possible to the Mountains all the way to Himeville. Mainly forest roads out there, with nice dirt highways, and one or two nice tar passes with awesome views.

Most of the Route was uneventful until the Triumph decided to die on us, try and crank her over and not a peep from the British maiden; she had fuel, no noticeable problems. Then Machete remembered a known issue, dust that gets into the happy button and dust that gets into some or other part of the motor and causes issues with the stepper motor. Tool-in-a-can was the lifesaver here, sprayed some into the happy button housing and not long after she purred to life. All smiles and we marched on to Himeville. The Himeville Arms had beer that we wanted to drink.

A quick splash and dash at the Arms, beer and lunch, a fuel top up at the local fuel station, There would be no fuel in Lesotho until we reached Katse, and we were off, ready to cross the border and climb the pass. We turned onto the road leading to the pass, which is a beautifully well maintained newly tarred piece of twisty road. About halfway to the Border we passed Sani Lodge Backpackers (https://www.sanilodge.co.za/ ), now this rung a bell in my head, I think it’s the place I had booked, but it’s not at the top of the pass. Alas I had booked the wrong place, I should have booked Sani Mountain Lodge (https://www.sanimountain.co.za/ ) if we were to stay at the top of the pass that night, no worries, we were tired and were ready to have a shower and chill. It only meant that out next day’s riding was a bit longer than originally anticipated. Let’s hope the pass doesn’t keep us for too long.

How does that one patch stay dust free?

So after just under 200km we booked into our digs for the night, got Uncle Morgan to join us once again and proceeded to laugh our heads off that night. I would have loved to know what was going through the minds of the German girls in the room next to ours. The Lodge was also pretty full; with entire families too, do people really take their kids and book into Backpackers? I wasn’t expecting that. We had supper at the adjoining restaurant, a fantastic home cooked meal, and I highly recommend that.

I had hung up my towel on a bush outside after a shower, by the time we went to bed it was frozen stiff, yes its cold in that part of the world over night.
