There is a lot of truth in that statement

Day 3
We were up at 6, I was still laughing at machete’s near tumble from the top bunk that he was sleeping on in the middle of the night. Outside the temperatures weren’t in our favour, -3Deg C is what the BMW registered when I first turned her on. Seats covered with ice had us wiping them down before loading the bikes up again to set off to Sani hotel up the road for a nice breakfast.
We had around 250km to tackle that today

Pappa Smurf back in the day

After breakfast we headed for the border, the tar soon ended and the dirt started, nothing too technical but the road is rutted in places, stopping over at the first waterfall that we found, this would be the last flowing waterfall we would see for a while.

The border was a breeze, we were asked how long we were staying, completed a form, had passports stamped and were wished a safe journey.
And the ascent started, it was much easier than I had expected, days leading to this I was very nervous, all that for nothing. Halfway up we stopped at a lookout point and admired the view before moving on higher, stopping again when we saw our first frozen waterfall. We were amazed, so much water frozen solid, it’s the first time in my life that I have seen anything like it, yes this place must get cold overnight.

Who brought the dop?

Then the steepest bit of the pass started, the biggest challenge we had was when Orko and Ginger Bread Man faced an on-coming taxi, descending traffic is supposed to give way to ascending traffic, I guess taxi drivers are exempt from that rule, I managed to glide past the taxi and take the lead, maneuvering the switchbacks like a pro, well I felt like one.

Eventually making it to the top, 2873m above sea level, and very impressed, it was nothing like the stories we had heard, it was pretty easy actually. Descending will probably be a lot more challenging.

The Lesotho border control simply stamped our passports took our R30’s each for each bike and waved us on.
This is what a taxi looks like when it takes the short cut down the pass, yikes!!

We stopped off at the Sani Mountain lodge,  the spot we wanted to have spent the night at initially, the view is amazing and their bar still sports the sign saying, “Highest pub in Africa”, which I have recently found out is no longer the truth. But we nevertheless took our pictures there and left our calling mark, the Frozen Foreskins were here.

Bucketlist item, checked
