Race Dog
With the GS trophy qualifiers last weekend I was keen to go and see so I gave Rodger
a call to see if he knew more about it as he is involved with BMW .
After a small discussion it was decided it would be a waste to go up and that he was doing a trip to Rhodes via Pitseng and Naudes Nek and then on to Port st Johns Via Basters se voetslaan pad with his brother Hue who now resides in the UK. Knowing Rodger and the trips he puts together it did not take a lot of persuasions .
Day 1
We left on a fairly chilly although the sun was shining Friday mornimg from Merrivale .
Towards Underberg on the lower luteni road.
Coffee at Underberg.
Then on towards Matatiele for a good home cooked lunch with Rodgers friends.
Thanks for that it kept us on the go nicely.
Leaving Matatiele looks like we heading for some snow.
Along the Pitseng Pass
Further up the snow had not melted in the shadows.
And on to Naudes Nek
Not to much snow on the roads but don’t stop in it if you on a up hill or at a camber .
It was my first experience and was surprised at how slippery it got.
Stop in at Tenahead lodge to visit my son who works there as the chief come every thing else when the manger is away.
Then down to Rhodes to Willems self catering lodge Kinmel Mountain Resort.
Day 2
On the road to Basters se voetslaan pad. We encountered this and had to divert to
Barkley East extra 40 odd km’s
Basters se voetslaan pad
Filled up with water at Ugi and rode a new tar road with very little traffic and lots of
Twisties until doing a little forest section and skirting around Mtata.
Then on to the Mgasi turn off 20km before Port St Johns and some fun gravel past the airstrip and down to our second over night stop.
PS road through nature reserve closed with fence and gate track gets a little narrow at times .
Crayfish for supper.
All night trans party music at next door didn’t help us get a goodnights rest I kept on thinking the aliens where landing. Really weard music they listen to. Anyhow this sunrise over the gap and second beach made up for it.
Waiting for breakfast .
Then all electricity in Port St Johns was out and we had to jump start the generator at the petrol station .
Out of town and on to Lusikisiki .
Rodger testing the new mitas back tire.
Hue getting the most out of his very worn back TKC 80.
Out of Lusiki and on gravel to Port Edward the frame of my 1200 which holds the front section ie headlight etc and which was already missing a section from a previous
Hella Hella ride snapped which left me with a very wobberly oilcooler and so the decision was made to the the smooth road home .
We stopped at Port Edward lighthouse coffee bar to visit the Keeper and have lunch good to see you guys are keeping well and thanks for taking the time to come out .
By the time we got to the ultra city my reserve showed 5km to go so filled up there said cheers to Hue who was to head on to Durbs and Rodger and I took the Umbumbulu road Home .
Great trip of three solid days just the way I like it .
Thanks Rodger for the invite hope to do some more .
