On certain Sundays in each month there is a sightseeing train that runs from Maraisburg station, which is not far from the N1 / Ontdekkers road intersection, out to Magailiesburg and back. It used to be pulled by a steam loco, but Transnet now does not allow Steam locos on their “core” routes and it is now a diesel.
The train is operated by an independent organization that uses it to raise funds for a steam train museum that they are building at Chamdor to replace the much-vandalised one in Krugersdorp.
A few weeks ago LeonDude and I did an exploratory ride to see if there is a rideable service road to accompany the train on it’s trip – the report was :-

The idea is that we see off the train at the station at 09:15 and then follow it along roads as close as possible to the track, and once in the countryside, along the service road. I am hoping that some of the Dogs will have family on the train to make it more interesting.
The train takes 1,75 hours to do the 75Km, but that includes a stop at Krugersdorp and waits for switches, so it will be a leisurely ride with a few cappuccino/smoke breaks . Out in the open it won’t be so easy to keep up. The bikes will do about 40Km of gravel
Once in Magaliesburg the passengers wander about until 15:00 for the return trip. A buffet is laid on by the Magaliesburg Hotel, but is booked and paid separately. There are other places in walking distance in Magalies like the Wimpy and a few coffee shops. You can pack your own for a picnic on the lawn.
I spoke to the nice lady who does the bookings, Beryl, and she was very supportive of the idea, and said it may be fun for the passengers.
