Tough little pony this ;)

At Harties today, tried to gear down and my foot is only fanning thin air

Pulled away in 5th and headed home, robots and stopstreets are pure murder, but I finally hit the highway. Bike still runs well, but feels/sounds somewhat different.

Fuel light comes, but I ignore it and carry on until, as Murphy would have it, I run out of fuel coming off the freeway. Push the bike to a Garage, put some fuel in and it does not want to start. Eventually it takes and I limp home still stuck in 5th. Bike smoking out of the exhaust now and sounding erratic.

At home I take it apart and discover the airbox full of oil - difficult to judge but at least 500m comes pouring out, and the airfilter is a oil sogged mess.

Anyone had an airbox full of oil before from labouring the engine in high gear? What is the mechanics behind this, why did the bike do this?
