In the USA dual sport biking centers around big bore single cylinder scramblers of the likes of the XR650R, 450/525/530EXC, DRZ400, YX450, G450X, FE570/610 and I am sure you are getting the picture by now.
These bikes are not only "twee spoor" capable but can also follow the venerable single track, the tip of the adventure riding pile and the best place to be on two wheels.
South Africa offer vast areas of single track country side as the last frontier of exploration. Thousands of miles of the typical "voetpad" are beaten by the footsteps of many rural villagers and their livestock without the interference of fences and signposts keeping out the "bad elements". Transkei, Lesotho, Mozambique and Botswana are just some of the territories waiting for the modern day intrepid Livingstone.

Here are some ride reports of the type of ride I am talking about:
Transkei. The really easy way. - https://wilddog.net.za/forum/index.php?topic=54409.0
Angola - a tale of “três cavaleiros” - https://wilddog.net.za/forum/index.php?topic=57397.0

Rides from other parts of the world:
This is a long read not for the faint hearted, and not the kind of ride one could do on a big adventure bike.

Only trouble is how do you get enough stuff on a smaller bike without screwing up the handling?
The clue is revealed by the crazy Polish riders exploring the backside of the Siberian outback in the above thread. They have decided to use the Coyote saddlebag from Giant Loop in the USA and have raved about the product.

The Coyote was specifically designed to fit on the narrow seat of a single cylinder off road machine with no carrier or other metal frames. It was made to sit close and tight on the bike keeping the weight in front of the rear axle and closer to the rider without interfering with rider movement on hard technical sections.
This type of luggage makes it possible to go explore the best of places like Lesotho with a smaller bike allowing you to travel more than just a days ride away from your trailer.
Go see the most tucked away spots and travel farther, longer and harder than ever before with the Coyote fitted to your "new" adventure riding machine, the old enduro mine dump explorer leaning against the back wall of your garage.

In order to promote the concept of small bike exploring in South Africa I am running a promotional price on the Coyote saddlebags of only R2507.49 for the next twenty bags sold.
