Here are some pictures of our trip down to the GS Challenge. We left on Saturday and spent Saturday night at the Red Sands hotel just outside Kuruman. We were in time to watch the rugga and we were well entertained that night due to a wedding taking place at the same venue.
After an enjoyable breakfast we headed off via Postmasburg, Griquatown, Niekerkshoop, Prieska to over night at Copperton.
From Copperton we headed towards Van Wyksvlei, Brandvlei and on towards Loeriesfontein where we overnighted at the Loeriesfontein Hotel. I can really recommend this hotel as an excellent stopover for anyone. The couple running it really went out of there way for us, even so far as getting the Windmill museum opened!
Red Route Day 1.
Our route stared with a special stage on the farm. A very good idea as it really gave one an idea of what was in store for us. SAND ! :'( :'( The rest of the route was stunning! A very long but enjoyable day.
Red Route Day 2.
Another excellent day, steep downhillâ??s river crossings and more SAND! Lohan on the yellow 1200 broke his alternator in the middle of the special and the only option was to tow him out and get him back to the camp. Lohan's brother Stephan started and then his clutch started slipping. The climb out the special was rather steep especially if one was towing. I then gave it a go until the smoke was billowing from my clutch. We were about three quarters of the way up when along came Gary Franks (Mr Enduro World) on a demo HP2. Needless to say we got the bike out and back to camp where a new belt was fitted and they still finished the day.
My next yearâ??s birthday present.....
Red Route Day 3.
Not a good start to day 3. My clutch was slipping but I decided to carry on anyway, nursing it as best as I could. We had a special stage which consisted of the worst sand that I have ever had the displeasure of riding in. I was so tired the thought of getting the camera out didn't even cross my mind. It just didn't stop. Finally it ended and we continued with the rest of a spectacular route. The scenery once we left Klawer was awesome! Well done BMW ! ! Of the four Challenges held so far, I would rate this one on a par with the first one held at Amersfoort. The people and routes were really fantastic. BMW have a big task ahead of them to top this one.
A special thanks to Lohan and Stephan and the rest of Pretoria's Bavaria riders. A very special thank you must also go to my brave pillion, Mrs UFUDO!!
