Tuesday 9th July 2013 - Day 14:

Our campsite at Maramba, just before we start packing up.

We had met Jerry, Polly and the kids. Great people. They were camping next to us. He is an Irishman, working as a malaria researcher in Tanzania. They were there to see us off in the morning.

The we leave Maramba Lodge and are on our way to Lusaka.

We are back on the open road. As amazing as Victoria Falls was, nothing beats being on the road.

The trip is uneventful. The road is actually quite good and we pass through the obligatory roadside villages, stop at the Motorcycle Market and fresh produce stalls, the rest is just open road.

Livingstone to Lusaka - 476 km.

The utilisation of trailers, in such a way as to have the maximum possible benefit for the operators, has to be remarked on.

Different levels for livestock and other goods. The goats, pigs and chickens are at the bottom with various storeys created between the cage framework to take different goods, hopefully with the most fragile on top.

Noah's Ark on wheels with roof rack.

Just some more of road to Lusaka.

Then some more of a bikers nightmare, trucks and taxis, all seem to be hellbent on self-destruction.

We stop at a deserted spot for some snacks and liquid refreshments.

I needed some ablution antics to relieve the pressure caused by excess food in the system. The ablution block, with 2 loos and a wash hand basin, had an external, but no internal doors. Desperate times require risky decisions. The place is mos deserted. Just a quick drop and run.

Ablutions are scarce in Africa. But sometimes................. you just gotta go.

It was a mission to sanitise the receptacle to a point of close proximity acceptability, remove the layers of bike gear and place them on the whb, then to hover in mid-air before placing a well aimed parcel on the layer of white gold so as to avoid liquid displacement within the bowl, which is of dubious origin, and if experienced on the tender skin of the nether regions, could possibly cause unwanted reactions, which in turn can lead to some embarrassing questions about the possibility of certain other activities, which can also lead to such rashes and itches, that may have occured whilst in Africa, so all care is taken, even although I might at that stage have looked seriously weird, all with an open cubicle with no door.

Then a bus stops outside.......................... seriously????

How the heck I did it, is still a question that haunts me. The zip was going up, as the door opened.

Post operation analysis and de-briefing revealed that no unwanted items landed within the confines of said bike gear.

Lusaka.

Cannot find the photos at present. Will have to come back to this section at some time.

We camped at Pioneer site just outside Lusaka. There was quite a big group of 4x4 enthusiasts. We had a chat with them for a while. Grabbed something to eat from the restaurant. To bed quite early.

Could only find this bad photo for here.

10 July 2013.

We pack up at Pioneer, hit the quite interesting little gravel road back to the Main road and head for Chipata.

I know there is some footage of this gravel road, etc. Just have to find it.

It is an absolutely beautiful day in Zambia. The road is amazing. Just a pity it is covered in tar.

We pass through quite a few of Murphy's favourites...........................AFRICAN VILLAGES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:ricky:

The one thing I neglected to mention is a very sad reality in Africa.

As we left Lusaka, I noticed this blue haze in the air. I at first thought that it was a heavy fog. Only later did it become apparent..........Africa is burning.

The rate of deforestation is scary. Wherever you look, there is a wisp of smoke or a cloud of smoke. All to make charcoal.

It is easy to be judgmental of the local people in this regard, but I came to a different conclusion some time later.

And then there were the truck accidents. This is only one of dozens we encountered.

That and broken down trucks. Plenty.
