hey guys... check out my report... https://wilddog.net.za/forum/index.php?topic=121471.msg2356155#msg2356155

the four of us didn't have any backup.

we got water at van zyl's camp[S17.64261 E12.75182]... from a local that manages the camp... waited a few hours for it and paid R20 for 6 litres... but this is were we stayed the night. (we carry about 7 liters each by default). note this camp is not very well maintained and is otherwise a dry camp. If it wasnt for this water we would have had some trouble.

the next day we got water again at Marble Camp[S17.98679 E12.58600]... and we decided to camp here too... because it was just to hot to keep on riding. This campsite is much better maintained and there was water in the showers.

Fuel we got at Okanquati at R15 per litres. And the next place we got fuel was at Puros... we asked the Okahirongo Elephant Lodge [S18.77598 E12.93269] for a few litres at R17 per litre.

note that... we got into a bit of trouble with the lodge manageress because of noise pollution... (rightly so).... park at the designated parking space at this lodge and walk the stairs to reception, take out your best negotiation skills. No cold beer was served.

with the right planning its possible to do it without backup.

get your riding done early in the morning before the sun hits.

the pass has a few tricky spots... that makes you sweat like a rapist.

to much loose rocks for west to east.

a post to another thread.... about fuel and water etc.

My dad also told me today that when trying to do van Zyl's pass.... a good test is the section between Etengwa and Otjitanda.

If you are alright with this section then you will be able to do van Zyl's Pass, because it contains some conditions that are very similar.

If you are not.. You can exit south at Otjitanda for about 23km you will once again find bad gravel roads.

Wouter took us into the Kumib riverbed to take the alternative route to Puros via the Huarusib river.

but alas it proved to much work for the time of day that the heat already struck us... and we turned around about 10km into the river to rather take the corrugated road.

Kumib river bed has lots of deep sand pebbles and rocks.

then we had enough time to push through to Sesfontein Lodge.

The last section has red sand... and we deflated the tires again

See many spiders in those rocky areas at night?

Lovely RR Bessie  :thumleft:

As I was reading it and looking at the pics a few things fell into place for me... then it hit me!

I remember meeting you and Wouter at Mukambi in Zambia. The two of you were heading out to go map somewhere in Angola, but your bike was broken and you were waiting for a fuel pump if I remember correctly. Think it was a BMW..?
