Please see the animation below.
The 4 strokes... Very simplified:
1: Intake: Piston moves down. Intake valve opens and air/fuel mix sucked in
2: Compression: Piston moves up and air/fuel is compressed. All valves closed.
*Spark* : From spark plug
3: Power: Piston moves down under the pressure of ignited air/fuel. All valves closed.
4: Exhaust: Piston moves up. Exhaust valve opens and gas exits.
With a big thumper, (like my XR), where in the 4-stroke cycle do you kick-start it ?
I understand that you push the lever through a couple of times til you get compression, then you de-compress and move the piston just past TDC, and kick.
I assume the above is the TDC at the end of stroke 2? (Compression)
How then does it fire if you missed the spark at TDC?
