Anyone who owns a thumper, and maybe more particularly a KLR, will tell you: 'what ever's not "loctited" on is going to rattle off', and none of them would be lying to you... I even listen to the advice, and once I got her home studiously did all the fatseners etc etc with loctite. As we all know, if you haven't done it yourself, how do you know it's done??? I had the stealership fit my IMS tank when she went in for her 20K biggie service, and obviously the screws that hold the radiator screen onto the bike weren't "loctited". Anyway, somewhere on the long and dusty, my screen and radiator parted ways, and thus my friedns begins the tale...
I went past the stealership and was quoetd somewhere around R450.00 (more, just cannot remember the exact amount, and thus the rounding off). Being a KLR owner, this was just way out of my league, and I resolved to solve the issue myself. Some of you may have noted my ealier rantings re: tools and the like. I actually aquired some!!!! ahh, i digress...
After asking nicely on the forum, a wilddog "lecap" came to my res-q. Thanks again mate. ANY KLR OWNER WHO NEEDS ANYTHING: LECAP (say no more!!!!) Anyway, he whipped one of his screens off, and onto the scanner, and the image was on it's way. Being a bit of a busy (read: lazy) guy I only got around to things a while later - I simply rode with zero frontal radiator protection, and a hatred for cars.
Eventually I got my ass into gear and started work. Here's the very begining, a printout template and a zama lek!!
I went to builderswarehouse in 4ways and got this galvanised braai grid. A steal at only R70-00 ( I see at least 3 radiator screens in there)
and a trimmed grill
then I put it on to check
and while I was busy I remembered to install (not sure if that's the correct term) the new 12.9 grade footpeg bolts. I had a failure of the left one on the 'Nicol on the way to work - not something you want to try without an amuance helicopter nereby... Anyway, these got "loctited" in, and following lecap's advice used bicep power only to get it in firmly.
still not entirely happy, I went down to Durbs with all the other Vaalies for the easter break. got some speeding fines in a cage for a change.... KZN zero mercy....
After returning and having a look at the original 'braai grid' screen I decided the holes were too big, and I shouldn't tempt another day of fate (flying along for a while with no screen at all).
I went back to builder's and bought some of this other rather hardcore mesh type stuff. R96.00 for a metre.
trimmed and zipped tied onto the original braai grid
and then fitted onto the bike and secured with extra large washers (discovered for free in a jar in the garage - my favourite kind of mod - klr remember!!!)
Total cost R170-00 ( I also bought some bolt cutters R250-00 to do the trimming - but that's an investment and thus not included - I get to use them forever....)
Once again a big thanks to lecap, your scans are now world famous dude.
