I saw Malgat's trip to Rooiberg and decided it would be nice to go check it out and possibly find their names as they seemed to have lost it there on the recce

Imagine my suprise when I saw that my fearless bike club, The Pta BMW M/Cycle Club was planning to go there for our first trip of the year, so seeing that I had no idea where Rooiberg was, and my Mapsource was returning several possible Rooiberge, I decided to join the club. Yea I know big groups give me clostorfobia, but I decided to live with my fears for the day.

Yes, it's summer and it's the rainy season, so in all likelyhood my second pet hate was also going to surface - riding muddy roads.

We met at Shell Atturbury early morning and set off towards Roodeplaat dam and eventually Walmansthal

The group before departure - a really big group

About 7 km's before Walmansthal, someone has decided to establish a game reserve, but fortunately for us the trip organizer had arranged for us to go through as a group at low speed:

After breakfast lunch we hit the road to Upperdeck to meet with some other mates and have quite a few sharpies.

Dozi paid a surpise visit and sang Ooh Ryperd amongst othe rthings, so soon we were having moerse lekker fun. Sorry no picks - was a bit under the weather

Yes gauteng and Limpopo province is wet, but if you're cautious, you can come away unscated  :ricky:

Yu have one live, live it  :3some:

The boom has only recently been put up all you need to do is ride slow and sign in at the boom.------NO Big 5 They are only at phase i now. Still a long way to go. Been riding through there for the last few years. They do have kudu-impala-ostrich and some other game on that section of road. A nice section of road to ride and well maintained.

Was wondering when they going to close that section. Good to hear one can still go through.  8)

Lekker speeltyd in die modder!

Bavaria, tanks for the invite and organizing the ride. My personal lessons in mud is dont deflate the tyres, hook second gear, keep a steady throttle an dont "throttle up" I bought that fugly T-shirt in Jeffreys for a spesific reason. Our dear friend on this forum, Dirt Dog, last year, blamed me that I started a nasty habit of mingeling with other people on a outride and ignoring the usual friends. I told him that 2008 was a good year for making "new friends"When I saw that T-shirt I had to buy it just to stuff up 2009 for him. The reaction from his side was very shit when he saw the shirt yesterday. DD, dont worry, I wont wear it again. Rooiberg will see me again, that part of our country is to beautiful :thumleft:

They do have either elephant and/or Rhino in the reserve. Went through it a few times last year, stopped one time to photograph some elly dung and spoor on the road. Within minutes I was set upon the wardens appeared out of no where, want to now if I had any problems, you are not allowed to stop on this road etc. etc. Beeg question is how long till they ban bikes or permanantly closed the gates?

Looks you had fun Leo. Was thinking of joining the bende but then decided to tackle the kanaal pad and railway line and then visit friends on their private game farm north of Brits. Was also a bit muddy.
Invitation for Oxtail stew with samp has won to a beer in Rooiberg pub.

The section where the boom is does not have Big 5 ??? Futher down on the fenced sections i have seen Rhino etc as well. The cattle gates they have for that section at the boom are not going to keep any cat -Rhino or Elephant back. That section is tooooo small for big 5. From boom to boom only about 4km long.

This ride was DotP's first dirt ride since doing the Kings Mountain basic offroad course in August last year.

The recce had been done be the ride leader on the Thursday and it was supposed to be a newbie ride - level 1/2.

With the rain before Sunday, it obviously changed things - but she still decided to to the DS ride.  Found it very enjoyable and tiring and a special thanks to Roger of Bavarian Motorcycles who 'chaperoned' her through the muddy sections - even walking her through the muddy sections a lot of the time

The only section she did not ride through herself was of course this one

One of the club members kindly offered to slide it through for her

A good but tiring days riding - and in hindsight it was good that it rained because it was an exellent learning experience.

DotP did however have one off - near the end and it was probably a lapse of concentration due to tiredness. It was not a very muddy section and I was right behing her.  Lost the front and did a graceful swan dive into the grass on the right, landing flat on her stomach.  I was a bit slow getting the camera out to get a pic of her lying in the grass

Once at Koekepan it was all smiles.  Here a pic of the two lady riders that were with on the day.  DotP on the left.

Nice RR a GS on a mudmonster like that is not fun unless you standing behind the camera. Well done to DotP the ladies are really getting involved  :thumleft:
