Got a PM from Andrew "Catchy" a while ago asking for a bit of help with mapsource and route and track stuff.

At the time I was up to my armpits in a project and could not help.

Things are a bit less hectic now, so I PM'd and ask if he still needed help and he said he is all sorted, but he thinks a bit of a workshop would not be a bad idea.

I am not a great Mapsource Guru, but I get by. I also use a few other free tools such as WinGDB, GPSBabel and GPSTrackmaker to help me with things Mapsource can't do.

What I was going to cover with him was:-

- Downloading from the GPS.
- Viewing tracks in Google Earth
- Editing downloaded tracks, Cutting, Joining and merging tracks.
- File formats and "when to use what format"
- Converting Routes to tracks and tracks to routes.
---- Intro and demo of some free conversion tools
- Getting waypoints, and tracks from Google Earth into the GPS.
- Building a waypoint and track library.
- Preparing routes for publishing on forum (when we can - after forum move)
   - Filtering and creating "Zumo friendly" files.
   - preparing routes and tracks for group events, bashes etc.
- uploading of published routes, tracks and waypoints to the GPS.

What I was not going to cover with him was:-

- GPS theory and interesting stuff.
   - Google is your friend.
- Using the GPS unit
   - for that you can RTFM.
- Installing and stealing Mapsource or the map sets.
   - RTFM and don't steal stuff.

I think the workshop would be 2-3 hours. A Saturday afternoon would be best for me.

No charge, but a small donation to the Namibian Wild Dog Relocation Project would be welcome.

Could do at our office in Wierdo Park, Centurion. We have a video projector and place for about 10. Would need a few chairs if you don't want to sit on beer-crates.

Any interest?

Okay, let's do this - we have a quorum (which was 1 !)
Sat 13Th March @ 14:00 in Centurion - our Office
Location Attached
Can accommodate about 10, but does not look like there will be that many.
Have about 8 chairs, but if you want to be comfy bring your own.
have plentsch tea & coffee etc, but feel free to bring a beer (or whatever) if it helps you think !
Please bring a laptop if you have - I am going to split you up and set an assignment.
For the folks without laptops, no problem, You can work as a team on mine with the video projector.
(the assignment will be downloading, uploading etc. We will prepare tracks for the Free State Bash)
For the assignment you will need:-
- Mapsource with any mapset (SA Streetmaps or Topo & Rec)
     - Can't help if you don't have - It's not free.
- Google earth, 3g if you have. I can network you if you haven't
     - (if you Dont'e have Google Earth I can install - it's free. )
- WinGDB - freeware,
     - I can install if don't have it.
You won't need to bring your GPS. The workshop is not about the GPS unit, but about using the PC and software to support the GPS and use it more effectively.
