Hi all and thanks for the kind words and response to the RR, should have introduced myself first in the new members section I suppose.

I’ve always wondered what would be possible on a small bike and then happened across Trailrider’s website and on it Ron’s Trans Africa RR on a Honda CTX200. I think the CTX and DR200 are fairly similar bikes but a specification matrix revealed that the DR slightly outperforms the CTX. Most notably the DR has got a 13L fuel tank and the CTX only about 9L .... important feature if you intent to explore some remote places and one of the reasons I took the DR200 on this trip and not the Yamaha TTR250.

Comparing the DR and TTR .... apart from both having electric and kick start (a feature I was looking for) and both being known for reliability, they are very different bikes. The TTR can be used as a fairly serious trail bike and as such outperforms the DR in all aspects except fuel tank size (only 9.5L). This relates to about 300km on the DR and 175km on the TTR before you have to switch to reserve.

I’ll be posting a RR to GrootMarico with the TTR soon, here is a pic of the TTR in the meantime.

The seat on the DR ...  :imaposer:, what seat ..... like on all small bikes it builds character. With just over 6000km on the bike it has however become a bit more comfortable .... but I don’t think comfortable will never be the really be the correct word.

On these small bikes I prefer using soft bags that seem to work well and to date have not given me any problems. One drawback though is security on solo trips, it is always stressful leaving the loaded bike by itself for a few moments when you have to go into a shop for supplies or the bathrooms at a fuel stop.

I agree. The minimalistic thing has huge appeal to me. Granted it's not for everyone, but i like it!

At last ;) someone who thinks like me. Busy completing my 450 for a epic adventure soon--maybe i can get my wife on her DR 200 to join--Slow--enjoy-see the sights at a slow pace and just enjoy---Not how fast you can get from A to Z.  ::)

Yup. Unfortunately time is a factor in most people's lives also. Sometimes the time needed to get to the place where you want to ride forces your hand, so bigger bikes also have their place of course. And not every-one likes puttering along. To each his own. ;D

My next trip will be with the TA because the amount of Km needed to be covered in the allotted time is the deciding factor. If I had two more days I would have preferred to go with the CTX though. Or maybe I'm just a little senile? ;D

What do you guys think about starting a thread specific to small bike adventure touring, say 250cc and smaller as a suggestion? There is a great thread on minimalist adventure touring over on Adventure Riders that is a good resource on this topic ....

... would be great to have a similar resource  but more specific to South Africa where small bike adventure touring enthusiasts could discuss the topic, post RRs or at least notify that a small bike RR has been posted in the RR section ..... I have noted that if your interest is small bike touring it is not easy finding these RRs in RR section.

Something like this? https://wilddog.net.za/forum/index.php?topic=11205.0

Thanks for the link Trailrider!

Brilliant ..... and now I’m never going to sleep. Have just completed reading all 12 pages of Metaljockey’s “The Wife, the Ex and the Kid”, inspirational and a must read with really beautiful photos.

Wonderful! See Berserker's RR Sept 08; DR200 through Kaoko, very able bikes!

Can’t seem to find this RR, do you perhaps have the link ... or on what page of the RR section is it?

Mat250 what a great report , I know the area reasonably well and realize that travelling at roughly 80 km's per hour you actually get to see feel and appreciate the area you are in instead of wizzing by at 130 km/h .

I have just bought a russsian ural 750 with sidecar and once I have mastered the art of riding the rig safely I intend a long and slow ride for a couple of days. I will definately use this RR for a reference as I like the area and there is some much to see.

I plan going in January once everyone is back at work and the kids are back at school , it should be nice and quite. I will not have to pack quite as minimalist as you as I have a sidecar without passenger a boot at the back roughly the size of 2 bmw sidepanniers and a rack at the back . This will allow me to take a nice size coolbox and a braaigrid so I can be self sufficient for a couple of days . I can also take my flyrod that always goes with me on a trip and spend some time fishing.

You have now really got me going.

I look forward to your next report.

MAT250 thanks for the great story, I have an older DR 200, and I was thinking of letting it go, but after your RR I am feeling inspired to giving it a little TLC and a few farkles.
Let me know when you ride again, we can start a real going nowhere...slowly seies :thumleft:
