So we did it again,i can`t seem to stay away!My 7th year in a row and the 2nd as a spectator. After initially expecting most of the Grahamstown Greyhounds to join...we only had 3! This was myself,Bigdom and Polo.We left home at 5-30 on Wednesday and slabbed it to Queenstown for breakfast. I was shocked to find my new Michelin Desert was breaking knobs off and was finished !This after about 300 kms! We had to shop around Queenstown for new rubber, eventually Mick at Yamaha helped out with a Kings Tyre?? Never heard of it! Well the options were limited...Kings tyre or...Kings tyre ! Well not only have i been mighty impressed...after much tar,mud and rocks,it still looks great after about 1600 kms!

Nice! - even the road to the Roof looks amazing.

I have no idea how the classes work, but what seems to be the bike of choice for the majority of riders ??? - 2-stroke, 4-stroke? ; cc?
Sorry, very curious.

Edgy, I smaak your bike.. but it cant be that distance comfy... or can it?

Hammerhead the bike of choice def is 2 stroke-plenty of KTM 200/250/300 and lots of Yamaha YZ 250`s (1st SA rider) StevO,bike is surprisingly comfy to travel on,easy to convert from tour to play mode(5 min) and man,can you play on this bitch!! When we travelled back on Sunday,we took the quickest route home (tar) and easily cruised at 140/150 all the way(700 kms!) Can tell you now, there are`nt many bikes as versatile as this, especially when the going gets tough!

When we arrived in Ramabanta, removed screen, mirrors and panniers...5 min later,we have a hooligan toy!

Yeah and this latter day hippie dude was dressed as if on a Sunday ride - brothel creaper shoes, blue leather jacket ... cool guy and obviously just doing his thang (maybe a bit of that Lesotho lucerne as well I guess  ;D). Check out the classic TT thumper kitted with genuine Basoot soft luggage (the latest at the Masuru Auto Show ::)) ... hessian donkey bags ... really classic. Love it!  :ricky: This is classic DS riding.

Couple of my pics.

Sorry, very curious.

You tell me whats best for techincal riding like the Roof....

1st Chris Birch - KTM 300 2-stroke
2nd Jade Gutseit - Yamaha 250 2-stroke
3rd Darryl Curtis - KTM 250 2-stroke
4th Bartosz Oblicki - Husky 250 2-stroke
5th Craig Stone - KTM 250 2-stroke
6th Altus De Wet - KTM 200 2-stroke
7th Kenny Gilbert - KTM 250 2-stroke
8th Lourens Mahoney - KTM 300 2-stroke
9th Clint Lund - Yamaha 250 2-stroke
10th Shannon Frost - KTM 250 2-stroke
11th Seamus Mcarthy - Yamaha 250F 4-stroke
12th William Gillet - Yamaha 125 2-stroke

Basically a 200-250-300 2-stroke is the best choice.
KTMs and Yamahas dominate.

Gillet is just a legend to pilot that 125 like that but its not a bad choice when the going gets rough.

2nd choice is a 250 4-stroke, many of the middle of the packers rode them.

Worst choice, a 450 or 525 4-stroke.

Some more pics ... Pigs love mud ... and there was plenty to be had ... and my pig ended up wallowing on one occasion ... as they say happy as a pig in shit!

Thanx for the pics! Looks like an awesome way to spend a weekend (spectating...  ;) )

Edgy, that 950SE of yours should come with an age restriction! I see one, I want one.

On the weapon of choice to tackle the Roof: I know that the 2-strokes have always been very popular, but thought they might be slowly dissapearing - with the likes of Honda closing down their 2 stroke factory and all.
(yes, I'm itching for a plastic toy... )
