Jean the doc said I can do gentle riding and this was fourth ride since surgery. Needless to say I don`t think he had the 4x4 route in mind when he handed out that advice..!
Took a bit of strain, but seems to have held up well, which I am thankful for.
:ROFLMAO: :p

So I looked up the word “content” because it had me bamboozled for a few seconds, was Hardy referring to the pics or a state of mind?

it says the following… ”in a state of peaceful happiness“

if that is not befitting of this, then nothing is..
cannot wait to get there and take it all in.

Freudian slip Elio.
I was referring to the media content (photos and videos) that the guys took whilst riding.

Without fail, getting a call from Hardi is a catalyst for something “bike” related to happen, and Wednesday morning 3 weeks ago when "HardiDa" flashed across my cell phone, was no exception.

Starting the conversation with “Ou Kloof” had me committed, and I was ready with “I do” before he finished – so quick was my “I do”, I had to phone him back afterward for the dates – suffice to say I was game.

Ever since the first ride reports on Ou Kloof appeared (I think it was @superfoxi ) Ou kloof was on my bucket list. Later pics by @Hardy de Kock and @hartebees only reinforced the notion, it was a matter of when.
The call galvanised me into action, having just moved house, it was a matter of unpacking riding kit and getting everything ready – in my case, it also involved me re-assembling the Green Mamba, the KDX, that has been living in boxes for the past 3 years – the intention was a nut and bolt restoration, but I made do with a fresh top end, new rubber, sprockets and chain, and also servicing the front shock.

1701112762843.png

Made arrangements with @hartebees to share travelling , the arrangement was that he will leave his place at 6:00, be with me at 6:30 to load – true to form, he pinged me at 6:00 to tell me he is on his way, and stopped at the farm gate 6:30 sharp – the guy is serious.

Being a Thursday morning, not having to work, made the whole exercise extra worth while. Loading the KDX, and throwing my kit and jerry cans in the back of the bakke, we were ready to rock in minutes

Heading NE on the N1 towards Leeu Gamka, we were on a collusion course with the Looney Bro's heading SW from Bloemfontein, a small town in the Free State right next to the Bike Riding Kingdom of Lesotho. With not much going on in the town, they visit the Bike Riding Kingdom of Lesotho ALL THE TIME - making them really good riders.

I also had the fortune of shacking up with them for the weekend - 100's of bike stories and seriously good humor. They are KTM mad, @Losper even has a KTM radio - credit where credit is due, that radio belted out some good tunes.

The icing on the cake was that everyone that went was Quest riders, an event run by Hardi's Specialized Adventure company.
Riders from 2017 (@twister) to 2021 (me, the junior of the bunch) was represented - I was looking forward to a weekend with like minded souls.

For riding I teamed up with this serious guy..

... Martin, he who was one of my Instructors on Quest 2021: Good humour, razor sharp wit and a most positive energy you can imagine.

To put you in the picture, Ou Kloof is a gravel pass that straddles the Nuweberg section of the Great Escarpment, criss-crossing various tributaries of the Koekemoersrivier. The pass takes you from the lower Karoo 960m up to the escarpment, crossing the border between Western Cape and Northen Cape en route.

1701112109388.png

The terrain is varied, in the lower Karoo it is Roggeveld to something that is almost Bushveld-like with Camel thorn trees, and it support quite a bit of game, Blouwildebees. Hartebees etc (lots of Kudu as well), adding to that "riding in Africa" feeling.

Making your way up the pass, you can it as sweaty as you want, with lots of dry riverbeds to hone your rock riding skills

1701115499914.png

If "rocky" is not your thing at the end of a long day, there is also the option of leisurely tracks to various look out points.

1701115767564.png

The views from the escarpment are spectacular, wide open vistas framed by hardwearing Dolomite cliffs.

1701115965858.png

From the top of the escarpment (you will notice from pics to come), the lower Karoo has this almost Namibian look.
If you are drawn to the arid areas like me, Oukloof will not disappoint.

Enough geography, what about the riding you ask - unfortunately I still can't find my camera's proprietary USB cable, what I will do is pilfer a few pics by fellow riders, and add context to them.

But first, smoke break.

We, that is speaking to the this bunch of joyous petrol heads;

PHOTO-2023-11-18-18-29-30.jpg

Were tasked with one thing: Ride the 4x4 tracks, MTB and Hiking trails, find new tracks, and stitch them together, and grade them from Green to Red.
We set out with enthusiasm, burnt a lot of fuel and came back with the foundation that Hardy needs to set out his event.

There are long distance "big adventure bike" routes, you can stitch them together yourself, or you can trust Hardy's prepped tracks, guaranteed to give you the most bang for your buck, set out to maximize your exposure to the area, laid out for sensibly lunch stops.

IMG_3697.jpeg

For the lighter bikes you can literally cherry pick a track, whether your focus is sand (trust the petrolheads to turn it into a dragrace),

there is even Moab slickrock style riding:

There is also "just riding", enjoying the landscape.

Some more to follow, for last, a small vid of what was ridden out first day

Brilliant Dave - Thanks

To laugh matters 🤣

We were told by Hardi to bring action cameras, to his disappointment, nobody had a drone - Martin made a plan:

@Losper and @twister ride together a lot, and as mentioned, they ride the Bike Riding Kingdom of Lesotho often.
@Losper has near "riding god" status because of that, @twister is considered the more "crash-test dummy" style rider.

The difference? @Losper has the camera and has seized control of all ride related narrative with evidence 💪

Martin and I made our own adventure by accidently going off track, like I said, Hardi wanted action pics:

Sitting round the braai at night - I reckon you're right.
If Hardi has his way, there will be more of these weekends - even with you dunking, I look forward to catching up with you there.

Hier kom n ding .. sub

Definitief Crazy Cuzzy, you will enjoy!

I have also visited these farms with my family. I will try my best to attend whatever is organised for 2024. Looks as if that devastating drought is somewhat broken?
Did you also ride the "vlakte" on the other side of the mountain range? - sort of the back of the guest house?

It is Thursday 16 November and I am up at 02h45. I am an early riser but I am still tired and I have not had good sleep the last couple of days.
Unfortunately I am one of those that find it impossible to go back to sleep once I am awake.
Eskom will be reminding us of their impotence in little over an hour and there is a lot to do before the sun is up.
Coffee, cigarette and my checklist in hand I attempt to find something that we might have forgotten to pack. Luckily the team did their work and after a few minutes I can sit back and relax.

Today we will meet old friends in a place that we often go to when we need a break from work. Our team is planning a few events for 2024 and in order for us to make sure we hit the nail first time with the routes and tracks, we called in some big guns for help.

- Hennie Roos, Martin Harmse and his brother Brian will drive in from East London.
- @twister and @Losper will drive from Bloemfontein
- @Kees will drive in from Stilbaai
- @PK will drive from George
- @Beserker will drive with one of our team members @hartebees from Cape Town
- @Parkinoff was supposed to come too - unfortunately he had a family emergency and could not make it.

Alan, Sharon, Chantal and myself would leave from Loxton and will in all likelihood be on the farm before the others arrive.
I have also decided to take my dogs with - Diesel and Pepsi will have to share a ride with Chantal. Diesel is way too big to sit in the front of a Cruiser.
I am worried about Diesel and his protective instincts. He has chowed my mom once - just about 15 minutes after she told me that dogs only bite bad people. He has also taught our neighbor some manners when the nozy neighbor waltzed into my house without knocking.
I remember thinking it will be a job and a half to keep him away from our friends for the entire weekend.
Anyway - I will wing it was my parting thought before I poured another coffee.

We left at exactly 07h00 am and made good time. From Loxton you head towards Frazerburg for 45km before you turn left at Brandfontein. From here you drive past Duck and Dive holiday farm, over the Sakrivierpoort crossing until you get to the Beaufort - Frazerburg connection road where you turn right. Another 50km on this beautiful undulating Karoo road leads you to the 120 degree Oukloof junction to your left.
At this point you can clearly see the top of Tafelkop in the distance and I find myself driving a little faster than I should.

I am so sorry to have missed this adventure. Hopefully I'll be able to join this special bunch of friends next year.

Thank you Pete, but in all honesty, the photies are those by Pieter^2 , Martin, Jaco and a few others.

This video by @Losper captures for me the unique character of the ride., The fact that you go from lower Karoo up the escarpment gives it another dimension.

The tracks and scenery are awesome, have a look here:

This appeals to me. Close enough to make it cost effective and all the appeal of Nam. Looks 👌👌👌

That's the spirit - part of my initial interest was that it does look like NAM, and a bit of Bushveld
Once you are there, you realise it is all of the above, but unique as well - and a ride destination in it's own right (and well suited to 450 type bikes - just saying)

From Colesberg it is only about 79 stop-and-goes - but confirm with @BuRP :ROFLMAO:
