Before I argue AGAINST this statement, I wonder why quite a few Wild Dogs say "A Ride Report without pictures is useless"  or "A Ride Report without pictures did not happen".  Curious.

Cheers.

Not everyone is endowed with descriptive writing skills that make photos unnecessary unfortunately, so most RR are a tad "flat" without some pictures to embellish the written word.

Funnily enough one of the best RR's I have read did not have a single picture.

I have people compliment me on a 'brilliant ride report' only to find out in conversation that the same guy doesn't know a quarter of what the ride was about as he only looked at the pics and never gave the 'words' a second glance.

To me that is very weird.

Pictures can at best only give 'context' or 'substance' to the story that was told.

10 people can post the same picture of the smitskraal watercrossing in Baviaans and it all looks the same, but the difference (and what it is about for me) comes in when I read how they experienced it and how they felt. Kinda making me see the same picture I've seen 100 times before as if fresh through their eyes.

A picture is worth a thousand words ! But I have to admit that reading the words does make the pictures come alive! Soon we will not have pictures and written word in ride reports cos of the video format! SSome like it, some don`t . . .  It`s a hellava thing chaps !

so now i know why Slainte and myself never went to rankins pass... because we didnt take any pictures....

didn't have ANYTHING to do with the navigator..... :patch:

I agree on both counts

1 A RR without pictures (i.e. just words) is soos n huis sonder n ma
2. A RR without words (i.e, just pictures) is soos n kerrie sonder chutney

Even though most RR’s here do have pictures, I can seldom see them at my work – Photobucket and Imageshack, amongst others, are probably regarded as porn infested, virus infected and very unwelcome  >:D and access are hence blocked by the institution’s fire wall :laughing4:

So, I must use my imagination - “theatre of the mind”, as the old SABC radio advert goes! But I check the pictures of the best RR’s (judged by the comments posted during the day) out at home in the evenings :thumleft:

I would really like to add some text to some of the ride reports but what invariably happens is  that I get pressurised to post the photos. By the time I have the pics ready the story has been told by the other WD's and I just add my pics to the arse-end.

I can't really repeat the whole story now can I?

Sprocketbek - your photos don't need words - they can stand pretty comfortably on their own.

;D ;D ;D ;D

En as julle skryf, skryf maar stadig want ek kannie so vinnig lees nie asseblief

Why do we read ride reports?

- To see what your mates are up to. Better with pics of them doing those things,
- To find nice rides for yourself for later dates. Pics make it easier.
- To read a good story well written. Pics provide colour, but it's in the text.
- To live another guys adventure - Pics provide colour to the text.
- To be aware of another guys problems, challenges and issues faced. Mainly in the text, but you can see a pic and say "Sheet. I'm not going there!"

Depends on the type of RR is suppose. But I'm a lazy oke. I typically scan the pics, and if they get my attention, then I read the blurb.

Why do I write ride reports ? I dunno. I suppose its an ego thing - "Hey look what I did you lazy bums!"

But I think in my RRs I hope I am giving somnething back to a community that has been supportive and good to me. I'm saying "There is fun to be had here"

And also a RR report is a way of acknowledging your mates who came along to make it more fun.

Keep them coming with pics and goos stories guys.

And another thing. I sometimes revisit my own RRs and get a bit of the pleasure again.

A guy asked for info on rides on the South Coast. It was great to re-visit my old RRs and remember the good times, and also remind myself of places this oke can go riding.

I am not a great story teller but my pics are there for those looking for new rideing grounds and for those that can't do those grounds and to tempt our international counterparts to come to RSA and ride our rides in our oversized playground. 8)
