Re-shaping a seat?

Ok, I got a KLE for my wife and daughter to learn to ride on. The seat is about 50mm too high and I am going to try and re-shape it at home then have it recovered, are there any tips to doing this. I thought about using a file and an orbital sander to shape the foam.
