Day 5
Vanrhynsdorp to Koringkorrel Baai – 253km
I woke up with the sound of rain constantly dripping on my tent, it was still raining when we got up, but luckily the rain stopped soon after, but everything was soaking wet. So we had a cup of coffee while packing up the wet tents. The plan was to take the back roads via Lutzville up to Groenriviermond, but we decided to slab it on the N7 to Garies, we were cold, tired, sick and wanted to get the tar over and done with as soon as possible.
The 150km to Garies seem to just go on forever, with the wind pumping from the east, it was a struggle sometimes to keep the bike upright! We rolled into Garies, settled down and started our 2 hour courage building wait while chomping down Bobotie Pies and coffee…..
I say courage building wait as we knew that we are going to tackle part of the notorious sand between Groenriviermond and Hondeklip Baai today. Neither of us has ever been here, but we have read about it and seen lots of pics with bikes really struggling on this stretch. We both enjoy riding sand, and we are not too bad in sand, but today we were just not “lus” for sand. And the thing with sand is that your head needs to be in the right place, if not, then you are in for a loooong *** day!
The 4x4’s arrived in Garies and after everyone fueled up we took it as our cue to get off our arses and get going…. The 4x4’x would take a different route to Koringkorrel Baai and would avoid Groenriviermond and the sand, so we were going to be on our own on this one.
So off we went in search of the sand monster……
All filled and ready to go!
Here we go……ready or not
Approaching Groenriviermond
We reached Groenriviermond and took a breather as we left the main road, nervous, but slowly getting into the sand-riding mood…
We rode down to the Park Entrance Gate and were greeted by the friendly staff. The old toppie looked at our fully laden bikes and smiled, he said we will be fine, but last week 7 big BMW’s came through here, but after a while they all came back again saying that this sand is just impossible to ride….. We chuckled a bit as we both knew this track is very doable on a bike….
Here the sand was still very hard with no problems at all, we stopped here to let some air out of the tyres
We did not take a lot of pics on this track, but we did have our helmet cams on, I will eventually get to the video editing…..
There was some of this though…..
and some of this…..
Screen shots from the helmet cams…
We made it all the way through the thick sand to Koringkorrel Baai with just two falls each….not too bad!
We again met up with the 4x4’s where we would stay with them for two nights, as we decided tomorrow will be a rest day……
