Day 8
Springbok to Sendelings Drift – 260km
The next morning, I woke up feeling like I have been hit by a bus! I think the mixture of medicine and Rum actually made me even sicker than what I was, but after a Wimpy breakfast, and a fill up, we were anxious to get going. Today its the Richtersveld baby!!
As we were chomping down our Farmhouse breakfasts we saw two guys on Red and White XT660Z’s parked on the other side of the road, with absolutely no luggage at all, and the bikes were pretty dusty…..Then we saw their buddy arriving in a Landrover. This is the way to do it, let your mate carry all the fuel, tools and luggage while you just have blast on the bikes……. Hmmmmmm
First stop was at the small town of Steinkopf. It was a Sunday morning and the deafening music and screaming/shouting coming from the tented church on the field across from the petrol station reminded me of being back in Zambia, close to some African church…..Jeepers they can kick up a racket!!
Hehehehe, Creamy Games Filling Station in Steinkopf
As we descended down Anenous Pass, we had the wind in our backs, man it was nice to have the wind from behind, as it was blowing like crazy!!
Not long before we reached the turnoff to the next town on our route…… we were stoked to be entering the Richtersveld a little bit later today
Smoke break with the Richtersveld mountains in the distance….
Getting ready for some serious sinkplaat!!!
After an uneventful ride, we arrived in the bustling metropolis of Eksteenfontein. I almost crashed into a bakkie as I took the final turn over a blind rise into the dorpie….we decided to visit the local Arab for some Cokes, he runs the little snoepie out of his garage!!
After Eksteenfontein the real riding would start, and this is the part we have been looking forward to. We were very excited!
The terrain got hillier and the track a bit more worn, rocky and twisty, awesome riding!
Then we arrived in the Richtersveld proper……so stoked to be here!!
The ride from Eksteenfontein to the Khubus / Alexanderbaai Road was absolutely awesome, man what a ride. The road is heavily corrugated and everything shakes!! I lost four screws from my screen that sheared off with all the rattling! But the views just cannot be beaten……. I love this place….
Marnus was having so much fun that he had to stop and inspect his front rim for smileys as he hit a cement driffie very hard, and very fast. Luckily no (new) damage!
I will let the pics tell the story of this amazing area…..
The view from 990 Mission Control....
Happy Chappie!!
We rolled into Sendelings Drif late afternoon and luckily got the last San Parks Chalet. We bought all the steaks and all the ice in the shop, and had an awesome braai overlooking the Orange River with Namibia just on the other side………….
As we looked across the river and looked at Namibia, we could not wait for tomorrow……Finally we are going to be riding our bikes in NAM!!!
