Nice report KnopKop.

Can I ask one question - how did the Desert Fox cells held up? I've seen report of them bursting open (or leaking) on fall, did you have any similar experience?

And how was their attachment to the rack - I have the same and plan to head to the same area as you guys, but unsupported and need reliable spare fuel cell.

Thanks a lot.

I am not sure if I would use the cell again. I guess if I did not strap it to the side of the bike, then they would have held up better. I had one fall in sand and the fuel cell tore. Having said that, strapping them to the side of the pannier rack is not smart (which I did). They will work much better if you strap them on top of the side panniers. I did not use panniers, and my luggage was on the back of the bike. The 660Z already has a high back seat, and the day after my fall I strapped the remaining fuel cell to the top of the luggage. This severely affected the handling in the soft sand as the extra 5 odd kg's so high made a big difference, so this is also not smart.

The fastening clips broke, but maybe I was a bit heavy handed in strapping them to the pannier racks. They should be perfectly fine if you strap them on top of side panniers.

If you strap them to the side, then don't fall!!

Hope this helps!!

Awesome trip and well written RR....... Thanks for sharing  :thumleft:

Yes it does help, thank you!

They will not work for me (shame I impulsively already bought them) as I wanted to fix them to the pannier rack exactly the same way you did. The reason is that for proper weight distribution I have my soft bags sitting upfront on the passenger pegs  and the pannier racks are basically empty (see the pic). So I thought I can fasten the Fox bladders there the same way you did and use them only on the occasion I need spare fuel (which I will on my next trip if everything goes as planned).

Now instead I bought smaller soft bags that fit behind my pannier bags on the foot pegs and pack light stuff like clothes (only when needing spare fuel) there and use the main panniers for the heavy stuff including petrol and water.

Empty the fuel cells as soon as you can, do not ride with them full until you need them. Ride 100km, then empty one into your tank and ride another 100km and empty another one. No use riding around with half a tank of fuel and two full cells...  ;D

Very nice RR. I chuck my soft luggage over the tank if I need some more space for a pillion or heavier stuff on the back. Looks like your soft bags will fit nicely over your tank.

I am VERY SLOWLY working through about 11 hours of video.....
