Reason for sale- was so inspired on a recent trip (on the XR) that I have decided to get more into moto trips and so want a more modern and versatile machine - looking at a 690.
I bought my XR400R in 2019 on 29 600km. It is a 1999 model. Currently it is on 35 578km.
The bike was in fair but not great shape when I bought it. Time and effort went in to have the following done to the bike:
Serviced very recently on 35 578 km by Mike Fuchs.
Decent tires on her (but road oriented). (see second last pic for tires).
The bike starts very easily when warm.
OPTIONAL extra: Giant Loop Coyote bag. (Old style with zip, has been repaired, in good working condition). (Fits the bike really well). R2400
After a long stand (weeks of no use for example) and in cold weather, I have struggled (but always succeeded) in starting her.
Plastics have been repaired.
Bike is ready for a trip, but if a collector wanted to make a project, new plastics are available (on American websites).

- Sort out carb, with new (modified) choke flap.
- Sort out 20 liter tank - now fits perfectly and allows for up to 400km range! (20 l at 20km per liter).
- Put on a custom stainless exhaust. Bike runs better and has a nice low growl, (not noisy- moderate).
- Suspension serviced by Mike Fuchs. Beautiful, very supple suspension.
- Very frequent oil changes since I have had the bike (29800- motul 10w40, 31256 belray 20w50, 32621, 34300 (
- ravenol semi synthetic 20w50- from Mike , 35578 ravenol semi synthetic 20w50- serviced by Mike again after most recent trip- yes, a bit excessive)
- bike is licensed, up to date to May 2025.
- Bike comes with original white front mudguard and original 10-liter petrol tank.
- Bike has a cool aftermarket seat cover.
- Folding mirrors.
