A new rider in our group, McSpanner, stopped at one stage and when no-one approached he decided to turn around in case someone had trouble. The road had an incline and when he wanted to put his foot down there was nothing there... He went down lake a sack of potatoes.

Luckily there was no damage to the bike.

A few kilometers down the road it was LGF's turn to stop. He's fender was rattling loose. That too was quickly remedied.

Kom-se-Pad links into Prins Alfred's Pass. With the recent holidays and coupled with the rain this road really took a beating. In fact, this is the worst condition I've seen it in. While riding along I suddenly hit a series of muddy potholes.

The bike was all over the road and I had my hands full keeping it upright and on the road. I had barely recovered when I hit the second series of potholes around a corner...

On the other side of the second set I sighed a sigh of relief and checked my mirrors to see if Gryph behind me was OK. Nothing...

I stopped and waited. Nothing...

I turned around to go looking for him hoping he didn't come off.

I found him standing next to his bike at the first series of potholes. He was OK. His bike too. He stopped because my Topbox wasn't.

I hit the first set of potholes with such ferocity that my Topbox flew off.

At least Gryph was OK. He recovered my Topbox 30 meters into forest. Had he not seen it fly off we would never have found it.

En route to "our house" in the kloof we were treated to some water crossings - always a favourite with he DS crowd!

At a leisurely pace people started to get ready for the day's ride.

We do not head straight out of Moordenaars kloof, we have to find Jan Prinsloo's house first, But all that's left at the site is overgrown foundations.

While here I realized that I forgot something at the house where we stayed at that I had to go and fetch. This meant that I fell totally behind the group and was riding on my own. I knew where they would be having breakfast so it was no problem - I actually enjoyed taking my time here, stopping, taking photos etc.

The pass out of Moordenaars Kloof - see the road high up in the distance:

Beautiful area this. I will be coming back.

P1160494.jpg

While leisurely riding along I came upon some of the group - GrypH had a puncture.

While here we also learned that we could not have breakfast in Kareedouw as all the places were closed

so after GrypH's wheel was fixed everybody said their goodbyes and different groups headed in their respective directions.

LGF, ChrisL, Rooipoot and I decided that this ride was far from over and we headed to a gravel loop near Joubertina that we missed out on the previous day. And what a GREAT decision that turned out to be!

That part of my report I will be adding to LGF's report here: https://wilddog.net.za/forum/index.php?topic=63090.0

Thanks to all who joined in this weekend, this definitely was another ride to remember.

Rynet there are lots of haunted places, incl Die Hel where you stayed recently... ;)

Lots of historic murderers as well. Maybe we should work on a Murderer's Route?

I think this trip needs to become a regular every year.
Stunning there and back. Great way to start the year. Would have liked to have more EC people there.
Maybe next year. :mwink:
Maybe next year do the rest of the road through to the Baviaans on the Sunday.
