Touring around New Zealand

Oh Wow talk about bringing back memories, me and the missus spent a month touring both North and South Island in 2000, unfortunately not by bike but by public transport and cheap accommodation. Queenstown NZ and Milford Sound are the best places in the world I have ever been to, and being ex merchant navy I have been around quite a lot. Please post more pics :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:

We have done South Island with a SA Taxi (Nissan E20) 4 adults and 4 kids and it was heaven - justmore beautiful (I guess).  Saw quite a few bikes and was truly jelous of them. Look at this water.  It is even better in real life.  Lost my camera in the freezing Dart river when I capsized my canoe. (spelling??)

Sorry for the Hijack.

I'm in for this ride
Did you ship your bike to NZ ?
Or rent a bike there ?

Bought the bike there and fixed it up, toured and sold it. I was there for 6 months.
Newguy what did the bike cost in Rand once you were finished with it? And how much did you sell it for?
Stunning photies!!

Today it's off to Dunedin. It's an easy ride from the west to the east coast of South Island

Once again rivers are everywhere, carving beautifully through the landscapes

Along the river I come to a powerstation and have a closer look. Clean energy...

Reach the east coast and its awesome to see the sea again...

Reach Dunedin and go for a drive around the Otago Peninsula, really great sunset
<a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/bemuC_uvMYm8wGx4KFpALg?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh3.ggpht.com/_J_C8w7718vM/TMhLgFrqK2I/AAAAAAAADio/DTehUjQ_gzw/s800/SANY0300.JPG"/></a>

Really rough coast lines. Good for bird breeding. Gannits and Albetros

In Dunedin I meet Alistair. He is also a big airhead fan. And he let me ride his home built modified G/s. This one is fitted with a husky front end and it handles great.

One of the locals...

Tomorrow I head from Dunedin to Christchurch

Some pictures seem to be missing here.
I manage to find a bit of dirt road from Dunedin to Christchurch
<a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/CAK44uwruL-4a3V3sRBTgA?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh4.ggpht.com/_J_C8w7718vM/TMhVhPaL3nI/AAAAAAAADjM/MEMlEghXwYQ/s800/SANY0309.JPG"/></a>

Being Christchurch, I decide to go and look at the big church...
To my surprise there is a Maori driving up the stairs of the church to take a photo of his bakkie
<a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/QO25zWNp6jWhwKrM0JKnTA?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh3.ggpht.com/_J_C8w7718vM/TMhVjlZQ6WI/AAAAAAAADjQ/cKmM82PnlIc/s800/SANY0310.JPG"/></a>

I seem to have gotten really bad with taking photos toward the end of the trip...

Just remembered camera batteries had not been charged for a long time, so not much photos from here...I was camping, so no power to charge.

Heading from Christchurch to Picton to catch the ferry there is a nice little stop that is quite a popular stop. Here I had some perlemoen as it is still legal to dive it here
<a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/erlvqQ4QRa1_XzjZMW1r5Q?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh3.ggpht.com/_J_C8w7718vM/TMhXUpmgMlI/AAAAAAAADjc/5h-vpI6EHKA/s400/SANY0314.JPG"/></a> <a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/vMt6LhZTid_DHO5kredW9A?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh6.ggpht.com/_J_C8w7718vM/TMhXVtmHNUI/AAAAAAAADjg/6kyiRv0vKPA/s400/SANY0315.JPG"/></a>

Picton really is one of the most beautiful areas. With many natural coves and harbours

Back on the ferry again to north island

Back in Wellington.
A buddy of mine from SA stays here now. So we had a pissup for a few days. He is also a biker:

Strangely this is the only photo I have of 3 days in Wellington

From Wellington I started heading back toward Auckland. Overnight stop in a small town called Timaru
Some interesting sheep dog training schools along the way. I watched them for a while and it is truly impressive what these dogs can do.
<a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/eOHf78VOpV1LCNG1AdCDcA?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh4.ggpht.com/_J_C8w7718vM/TMhfKnKh5KI/AAAAAAAADkA/6l0JhWZhhGs/s400/SANY0333.JPG"/></a> <a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/1PT58aQDA3XKxq5YwRhmnA?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh3.ggpht.com/_J_C8w7718vM/TMhfL56L3aI/AAAAAAAADkE/uqMeclLM42Y/s400/SANY0330.JPG"/></a>

Very uneven country here
<a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/B93XQxtWkT-L2WrzPKyMKA?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh3.ggpht.com/_J_C8w7718vM/TMhfNp489zI/AAAAAAAADkM/L1ZIBNU8GMA/s800/SANY0334.JPG"/></a>

Camping spot for the night just outside Timaru

<a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/q4i1Hn7s2EyThsdK3xaYTQ?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh3.ggpht.com/_J_C8w7718vM/TMhfQDMeR8I/AAAAAAAADkU/hxLU9DwUUPY/s400/SANY0339.JPG"/></a> <a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/qPUPztuV9otIRuZF4FSFAg?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh4.ggpht.com/_J_C8w7718vM/TMhfRjIhj3I/AAAAAAAADkc/A5I8gXDJSVI/s400/SANY0341.JPG"/></a>

The last night of my trip and I managed to get well rested for the last day. Easy trip back to Auckland.

I think the flat battery kicked in here. My last photo I can find is of the Skytower going through Auckland on my way to the North Shore
<a href="https://picasaweb.google.co.uk/lh/photo/SXrmmPK_MmOkVV9qSp945w?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh5.ggpht.com/_J_C8w7718vM/TMhkTWovUYI/AAAAAAAADkw/rts5vqUJuOg/s800/IMAGE_356.jpg"/></a>

Despite all the fun on the road; it was really good to get back to my sister's place for a properly cooked meal.

An absolute blast with no issues except for the camera which I lost to the rain. a Trip that I would reccommend to any of those that want to do a bike trip around another country as most of New Zealand can be covered in 3 weeks on a fairly modest budget.

Gee, how did I miss this RR so far?

Very nice, but too very cold for my general riding preference. :thumleft:
