Epic trip.. and yes, peter you are a real redneck :)  herbal offerings???  :pot:
                                                                                                  :laughing4:
                                                                                                  :toothy9:

Lekker RR Peter, but talk about mishaps and disaster!!  All you needed was smallpox and dysentry, and this trip would be up there with Livingstone and Stanley. :imaposer:

When are we going again?

About the direction of van Zyl's; on amotorcycle, regardless of what is being said, direction does not matter. The 4x4 descending in the correct direction makes more damage with skidding and sliding wheels than a buffoon on a bike can going the wrong way.
I hope this clears up van Zyl's regarding direction on a bike.

O NO another braking debate looms  :laughing4:

Nice RR. Short and sweet.
I wonder where the horror stories about van Zyl's pass come from?
It's hardly a grade 4 in my books. If people would drive more carefully and with the right tyre pressure, it would be no problem to use the pass both ways.
The remoteness might be the real fear factor on this route and the loose rocks are a challenge on 2 wheels.

Just imagine what the greenies will have to say about the locked rear brake down van Zyl's......... :ricky:

To my friends: Peter, Alan & Kevin, thank you so much for letting me tag along with you guys on this trip. Not only was it the best trip I ever did, it was a good "head cleaning" session.

The highlights for me was:
1. The nights sleeping in the riverbeds and under the stars. Just us and the bikes.
2. The last bit to Marble Camp in pitch darkness.
3. Searching for cold beer in the villages!
4. The luxury of a bed in Epupa Falls.
5. Doing Van Zyl's the wrong way!
6. Hmmm, the "herbal offerings". It was my first time. I am a virgin no more...
7. Peter(watkykjy), not getting ***** by the crocks.
8. That German chick in Joe's Beerhouse...
9. The Satphone call home after Van Zyl's.
10. Being in the company with 3 great guys who tolerated my small conservative world for a whole week, who always stayed positive, who never gave up and who makes the most of every moment they live.

Now, there is a pic or two that needs to be post.  >:D

Excellent RR, looks like an awesome trip.

Loved the mixing in thing with the locals and the pool comp. Who won?

Guy's lets argue about the direction of van Zyls somewhere else, like in this thread I started especially for it.

I did find it interesting that there is are curios being sold at the top. Must be a lot of people going through there nowadays. The tracks certainly indicate that.

Horror stories come from the remoteness. If things go wrong, you are about as far from help as you can get. This plays on your mind a lot.
Lighter bikes also have a huge advantage.
I did it (supposedly the correct way round) on my R80 G/S PD and it was tough, hot and exhausting. Without enough water,  it could get scary.
Come on Harry, you've got the bike!

ja. hierdie trip moet mens elke jaar doen.

Also a statement that is worthy of another thread.
I believe we should not over-travel remote areas.
Been in the Hell (Gamkaskloof) about 7 times since 1982, no point in adding to the traffic.
