What is the best model Africa Twin (old range) to buy?

Here it goes....the can of worms is now opened... ot:

I'm considering buying an African Twin (old range) instead of the regular 650 Dakar plan, just because I have always trusted Honda products and harbour a couple in the garage... eepwall:
To be used for light off road riding - such as gravel roads, the worst Gamkaskloof. However, I heard much about electrical issues on ATs.

1.  Is the AT a more able replacement for a Dakar?

2.  What model is the best to look for - obviously making it the most popular?

3.  What is the kms the engine can last - obviously being serviced regularly before, etc?
