When we did a ride through the little Karroo recently, one of the roads we wanted to take had a closed gate at the turn off. We decided to go to the next turn off where there was no gate. After going along the road a few km's we again came to a closed gate, but it wasn't locked and there was no threatening "keep out" sign. We were sure we were on the right road and decided to go through and keep going. We came out at a few gates closed, but not locked and we just continued on the road and eventually came out at our destination. I assume the gates are put up by farmers or land owners to prevent animal migration.
Question is, what is the protocol here? Were we trespassing? Obviously we closed the gate again after going through. Maybe we could get some input from the farming types here.
Also I noticed that a lot of the gates had a square piece of corrigated iron fixed to it. Some of these were painted white, some black, and some half black and half white. Is this some kind of farmer code, road marker, or purely decorative?
