One last quickie from The Highlands for this year.  Was in need of some beer, so I decided to ride up from Inverness to John O'Groats to get some from the brewery there.  About 265 miles (425km) in generally lovely weather (it was unseasonably warm yesterday), with no issues other than knacking wrists when I got home cos I haven't ridden the Falco enough this year..  Good way to end the season here. ;D

I may have posted  pics from this spot before overlooking the Dornoch Firth towards Bonar Bridge, but the clouds were nice.

Lovely tin roofed church in Strath Naver, a valley that suffered severe depopulation during the Clearances.

Looked like the weather was coming in from the west, but I was able to keep ahead of it.

The booty with the famous sign in the background.

The sign and the ferry, which has been running to Orkney for 500 years or so.  Obviously not the exact same boat....

Quick pause at the world's shortest street on my way south; Ebeneezer Place in Wick.

What happened during the clearances TD?

Basically the  big landowners (particularly in the north) decided that having sheep on the land was a better bet than people (huge demand for wool from the newly mechanised weaving industry) , so their tenants in crofting communities were, over time, booted off the land to either settle on the coast to fish, go to cities like Glasgow to work or emigrate.  The Countess of Sutherland was particularly keen, and estate factor (manager) Patrick Sellar was notoriously brutal.  He (Sellar) eventually settled in Syre very near the church in the picture to farm sheep.  Can't imagine he was made very welcome at the local pub!

This all happened between 1750 and 1860, and the population of the northern highlands has never recovered.  The Sutherlands did build themselves a particularly fine castle (Dunrobin in Golspie) so it all worked out fine for them.

Thanks for sharing :thumleft:
Very interesting indeed!
