Wooden garage door treatment

One of my December to do things is sand down the wooden garage doors and re-treat them. The doors are east facing so take a hammering from the sun from sunrise until about noon. Any advice on which is the best product to use and is the old varnishing method still the way to go or are there better wood treatment options?
