1. At the top I take the gravel to Uniondale. Its two o'clock in the afternoon. 5 hours of leisure ride to get here.

2. Some distance in you get this turn-off which says Uniondale. That is the Vaalwater road, a nice undulating cruise through the hills. If you go straight, you're on the Hartebeesrivier road. Both take you to the N9, the latter through a big game farm

3. I've not done the Vaalwater road from this direction, so I take it. You get these long, "roads in the distance" straights,... feet up, lean back and cruise with the wind in your face.

4. The beauty of a throttle lock... taking pics while riding.

At around three I arrive in the metropolis of Uniondale for a coffee, coke and sandwich. The little place I park off in has some nice old stuff.

Its really become a nice little town.

As I'm in no hurry I spend a leisurely hour there on the stoep. Its four o'clock and decdision time, but I don't want to make any, just ride.

Initially the plan had been to make it to Uniondale late afternoon and then sleepover at a place called Eagle Falls on the Kamanasie, and get to Koedoeskloof sometime Saturday. Its too early to stop riding, but I decide to go see Eagle Falls in any case.

Some time ago I get a call from a guy called Michal, who owns the resort called Eagle Falls in the Kamanasie. He has heard about the bike get together I arranged at Doornkloof and would like me to come and see he's place and maybe do something there. I promised I'd come around when I go that way again.

Today I'm going that way again, so I give him a call to get directions... and had a really good laugh. Take the Kamanasie road and after the second cement driffie you'll see a big stone on the left. Drive past it. A little futher there is a skew fencepost on the right and some yellow flowers. When you've gone over the third driffie you've goine to far. After the red painted gateposts you'll go up a hill and on the top is a Coca Cola sign bord with Eagle Falls written on it, but it is faded so you won't be able to read it, but you'll recognise the spot by the orchard on the left... and sometimes birds sit on the fence so you can't miss it. Turn left at that road and drive 3km to Eagle Falls. If you see Table Mountain, You're lost  :imaposer: Now where have I heard someone give directions like that before, but I found the place.

Nice views driving along the Kamanasie road

I get to Eagle Falls and meet Michal. A friendly oke who wants to please. Really nice place with excellent facilities. Restaurant, bar, fixed accomodation, camping, BIG lapa, communal kitchen and decent ablutions. They do catering on site and anything you want. Lots of outdoor activities.

I would not be embarrassed to arrange a jol there, but not the bash. Although for bash weekend I won't mind picking up the kitchen and lapa and putting it at Doornkloof. I can see Marissa having a jol in that kitchen. A weekend get together for say 30 peolple or so would be great.

Those of you taht have done the Paardepoort road from harold to Deyselsdorp will know the fourway cross just as you come out the poort. I've always wondered where the cross road comes from and goes to.

I gather Michal knows the area well and ask him to explain how to get on that road that will take me to the crossing. Again he spins my head and Table Mountain is not one of the waypoints. But I have an idea where I'm going and if it goes pear shaped I'll find the R62.

I head of towards and past Buffelsdrif (just typing that name gives me a rilling. Those who have read the RR of Lyn and my travels will get it)

1. When doing that RR, I came accross pics of a random ride we did and could not place this pic.

2. Here it is again and now I know, on the Kamanasie road just past Buffelsdrif, before you get to Daskop.

At Daskop I keep left at the dog leg (right takes you to Deyselsdorp) Now I have to look for a road to the right before I go out the mountains. The turn-off is on a sharp right hand bend and I'll see it when I see two workers cottages accross a small valley. Ja-nee.

But its easy. As I approach I can see the road along the mountain I want to be on and easily find the turn-off. I turn right and get on to a beautiful rd with nice views. Its late, past six and I'm having a great ride. I'm still not sure where I'm going to end up, but right now I'm having fun

1. So it brings me to the fourway cross and now I know and I'm happy. Another road added to my headmap

2. I carry on and it takes me to the R62 on the way to Oudtshoorn at this turn-off... another one I've wondered about for the past thirty years.

Now its time to make a decision. Secretly, in the back of my mind I had the idea that, should I make it to Oudtshoorn to get groceries, and enough time to get to the top of Rooibergpass with light to spare, I would have stealth camped there at the stone cairn. But I was not going to make it, so Koedoeskloof here I come. It will be dark by then. No need to rush in any case then.

I need coffee, but the Wimpy in Oudtshoorn is closed and I'm too lazy to turn around in traffic to find a coffe shop. Die Dorpshuis in Calitzdorp it will be. The sun is getting low and I have difficulty seeing ahead. The last time I had seen De Hoop church was in 1983 when I walked past it on a Vasbyt during NS. Not a good memory and through the years I often driven past it with a reminder to turn off one day and take some pics.

1 & 2. I take the turn-off to get those pics, while I wait for the sun to drop behind the mountains.

3. Its near dark and I head for Calitzdorp for that promised cup of koffee.

Here I wait it out 'till its properly dark and head for Koedoeskloof, and a good jol awaiting, where I arrive around half past seven ( but not before almost stupidly killing myself in Huisrivier pass over taking a truck on the inside of a blind corner, in the face of oncoming traffic. Why, after such a great day of superchilled riding, I would now get impatient is beyond my comprhension, but **** happens and I'm just glad I'm here to tell you about it)

Thanks. Makes it easier when you share something you love doing... and I live to ride my bike.

I'm the last one to head off to the tents at about twelve, but we won't be sleeping just yet. The Twins had decided they are now clever enough to solve the worlds problems and were lying in front of LS's tent brumbling away. It was a not to unpleasant drone that sent me drowsing... (but was kept awake by the interruptions in the narrations all the time  >:D ) I think they are however still trying to figure out why the wheel is round.  :imaposer:

All would have been well, untill something set LS of laughing and then Kaboef joined as well. LS does not just laugh, he gets hysterical and then you start laughing. The mountain bikers who had to get up at dassie pis the next morning would not have thought it funny, as I think they then woke everyone up.

But all's good and we had fun. Next morning we were up early checking the bikes for the day's ride and getting coffee. It promised good , but turned out hoorible blistery day.

Always a pretty site seeing the bikes parked and waiting

Most of the guys were taking short rides on the Saturday. The weather did not hold promise, but what the hell.

Ls and Kaboef had never done the Groenfontein road from Calitzdorp to Kruisrivier and we had decided to do that. I was on the road for 12 hours yesterday and tired. My riding mojo does not want to come, but I still enjoy the ride through the 22km poort to Kruisrivier. We take a smokebreak at Kruisrivier and the other two let know their mojo is not good either.

LS had never done Gamkaskloof and they decide to go. Its too much for me so we part our ways.

Back on the R62 the wind is howling, making for a very unpleasant ride. I get through Huisruvier pass safely this time and take the gravel road  Opsoek to Zoar
