A friend of mine had his back wheel lock up as he was gearing down from 6th to 5th gear on the N1 as he was about to turn into Matjiesfontein. He took a hard fall but no serious injuries .
Question is what was the cause ? oil levels on gearbox and final drive look fine and back brake calipers have released but the wheel is totally locked up .
Obviously at this stage we can only speculate until the gearbox is opened up but on searching the net I came across the following.
Bmw R 1150GS power train recall 02v319000.- number of units 515.
Manufactured between sept2002 and oct 2002.
Defect summary-it is possible that the 3rd and 4th transmission gears may not be securely seated on the intermediate shaft-consequently when shifting from 5th to 6th engagement of the 2 gears may occur simultaneously.
If this happens the gear wheels could crack and lock up the rear wheel.
Not saying this is what happened but the bike is a 2002 model.
Will update this post as we get more detail.
