Riding up towards Tiffindell, Ben Macdhui loomed ominously above the resort and most of us were a little  nervous about the climb.

Staff at the resort told us that groups have been up there since it snowed a couple of days before and there have been quite a few offs, including a tour leader who dropped it on the switch backs

Standing at Tiffindel reception and hearing all the stories of failed attempts at ascending Ben Macdhui was not the best thing for my confidence. I wanted to get going and concentrate on the route instead of imagining all sorts of fatal scenarios. Self doubt has always been my biggest enemy on the bike.

Guys started pulling away. I was towards the back of the group and the moment we hit the track it was clear that this was going to be a real challenge. It was wet and muddy and snow on large parts of the track. The first two switchbacks claimed a couple of victims. I stopped after the second switchback to assist Shirley who had toppled over. I got going again only to be blocked again at the next switchback. I chose a different line and passed the casualties to ride up to the plato where the rest of the group had gathered after making it up. It was really tough getting up there in the traffic and looking down the slope at guys struggling to get up, I felt guilty for not staying with Righard to make sure he got up safely.

Ben McDhui is very much a “each man to himself” gig, particularly on the way up, you can’t be feeling guilty.  You need focus and momentum if you want a clean run at it. 
You must have become aware of the adrenaline rush once you get to the top, there is no time for you to “wind down”.  Keep it coming, this has me on the edge of my seat.
