Day 1
On 12 December me and my dad left Bellville at 10am. A lot later than what we normally would. The trip also started a week late. My twin sister had her first born the evening of 11 December. So my dad and I first went through to introduce ourselves to the littel girl. She was defnitely worth it.

Bikes were packed and we just had to get dressed after we left the hospital. We knew day one will be a long stretch on a boring road. We got to Hopetown around 18h30, covering 810km for the day. We booked into a self catering pozzie for the night. After a few beers, droewors and left over padkos it was time for bed.

Day 2
We woke up early, looking forward to our first border crossing. Ramatlababa border crossing was reached round 13h00. Everything went smooth & it took about an hour to get through. The cost was 150 Pula per bike. Then we moved on to Mokolodi nature reserve, doing 912km for the day. Botswana was very green, with plenty of trees. People were friendly, the trip started to take shape.

Bikes are not allowed at the campsite, but we arranged to leave our bikes at reception with 24 hour security. A friendly game ranger took us down to the campsite. We saw some beautiful wildlife on our way to the campsite. The campsite was really nice and had an outside shower and toilet, no electricity. We had a few beers and made a lekker fire... but no meat, so out came the 2 minute noodles and tuna.

Day 3
We woke up to the sound of birds, plenty of birds. The ranger was picking us up around 8h30. Out came the gas stove and I had my first coffee for the day. My dad doesn't drink coffee or tea and hasn't for the past 20years, so he had some water ;D. Camp was packed up and the ranger took us to our bikes. Today we are heading in the direction of Kubu Island. Not yet knowing that we will  get the first rain of a lot still to fall in Botswana. We ended the day at Granny's self catering, only doing 329km for the day. We arrived in the rain and was not in the mood to go exploring around town, which did not look promising when we drove through earlier. We had a few beers and the worst dinner on the trip, a tin of viennas and half a brown bread. The bungelows at Granny's where very neat and the staff friendly. The room only had a double bed, so my stretcher had to do.

Day 4
The plan for today was to pick up supplies and go camping at Kubu Island. It was not raining which was a relief, but heavy clouds in the sky. We got dressed, stopped for fuel and as we left the rain started falling. After 80km on a tar road, the road turned to gravel, then mud, then thick sand. Luckily the sand was not too bad after the heavy rain. Passing the first big truck that was stuck, we knew it was going to be hard work. My bike does not mind resting, but I sure mind picking him up. Not a lot further we stopped at the second big truck that was stuck, full off cattle. We had a chat with the guys but could not be of any help to them. It was pouring down and the road just got worse. We had to have a meeting and against our will decided we have to turn around. Camping in the mud and rain started looking less "lekker" :xxbah:. This is also where I dropped my bike for the first time, making it easier to turn around.

Hoe kan iemand met n dubbeldekker beesinterlink in daai wêreld rondry? Hoop hulle het die bees laat afspring. :eek7:

I was soaked, from my boxer to my socks...everything! At least my dad still had dry socks. The Sidi adventure boots are great boots, though I think the GS pro gives more protection, they suck in water! Also a word of advice, get proper rain gear. We opted for a pair of Johnson's from Agrimark, they kept us dry for the first 20min :xxbah:. We did about 300km in heavy rain. With all the animals on the road and almost zero visibility, we decided to get off the tar and turned left on the first gravel road. This road will take us to Mosetse. This stretch was really enjoyable, with the rain that calmed down a bit, I was having fun. :ricky:.

Come on... keep it coming.

You guys did some serious miles the first 2 days.

I like how you say on day 3 you 'only' did 329kms - to me that is the perfect distance per day.

300 odd km is perfect, but due to starting a week late we had to push.

From Mosetse we took the tar road to Nada. Again... soaking wet. Water even got in to our panniers and topbox. The only dry things was what was in our Enduristan bags and the socks my dad had on . We knew that camping was not a option, so we booked a self catering apartment at Nortgate lodge- 330km for the day.
