After more sand and more sand and more sand we reach Van Zyl’s camp. This campsite is situated next to a large riverbed in a stunning piece of bushveld. However, Van Zyl’s camp leaves me despondent. Some or another institution/agency/charity donated and built beautiful amenities in the middle of nowhere. Built to blend in perfectly with the raw surrounds, there are flush toilets, hot water and basins sitting proudly at each of the 3 sites. It is owned and managed by the Otjitanda Conservency to run as a commercial venture by the local community. No electricity, but a donkey to provide hot water. Everything you could possibly desire. Nothing, however, is working. I am deeply disappointed. This is an example of an utterly wasted opportunity.

That aside, we arrive, and we are knackered. The Cruisers and Unimog will only arrive a lot later, having to take the long way around. The crew arrives, we set up camp, and are again spoiled with an amazing bushveld dinner next to the fire that evening. There are no late-night parties, your body does not allow it. Most evenings, by 2100, everyone is already asleep. After a long, hot day in the saddle, you make peace with your hygiene situation as there are no showers or running water. It is what it is, and it is awesome.

@Parkinoff passed out as we wait for the cavalry to arrive :ROFLMAO:

I get to sleep next to my bike, again. And read a Jack Reacher novel. Life can't be better.

Camping activities...

Gerhard doing his videography thing, can't wait to see the end product! Side-story - Gerhard came along to video and photograph the tour, him being a professional movie maker. He had this beautiful drone that we would hear buzzing overhead at campsites. At Kunene River Lodge he dutifully sent the drone out over the river to get some aerial shots. However, smart technology would interfere. The battery power ran out, and the drone then automatically flies "home", to where it took off. There were trees along the riverside and the drone promptly crashed into some overhang. It tumbled down into the fast-flowing river, a mere two meters from where Gerhard was standing. No chance or way of retrieving it, the river was flowing strong, and you will be thrown down the falls. Johannes there and then renamed the drone to a drown. That was funny.

Blessed with a contrarian sense of humor

Jeez I had to go and look that word up!!! In Namaqaland that word would not sound like a complement!!!;)
:p:ROFLMAO:

Ek sien die RR word net in werksure geskryf - naweke moet mens maar wag.

Bringing balance to the characters on the tour is an old friend whom I had the pleasure of touring with many times before.
Peter King or @PK as he is known on the forum is a philosopher, an adventurer, and a friend. Never one to shy away from a good debate, he has taught me so much over the years.

Peter, like Bart finds himself in the admirable situation where he retired at an early age, and now pursues happiness on two wheels with people sharing the same passion for adventure and friendship.
Pete has helped me before on Quest and on tours and has an intimate knowledge of the workings of our team and how we do things. Much of our strategy has been shaped by his input.
Pete will always offer his assistance and is one of the most caring persons I have ever met.
He loves the Kaokoland and Damaraland and I believe he will be back for many tours there.

Peter used to frequent the desert on a DR650 but has recently acquired a CRF 300L, and I believe he enjoyed the riding on this year's Northern Namibia tour even more because of this bike.

Thanks for making our tours better Pete👊

Now I fi-nal-ly know why you (that's @P.K. !) placed this bag in the most visible spot, for anyone impossible to miss!
:ROFLMAO:
If it was Hardy's you'd find anytypeofbike-spares in it, and it would have been - visibly mind, it's an open bak - chucked in the back of his bakkie! Hence I wonder Doll, what did you keep in it? 😘

I fully agree Pete was a calm presence and has a lot of good advice, I enjoyed Jaco's talks as well and whenever he started smiling I could feel my stomach turn. Elio and Patti were great company. Jerry was the happiest person I have ever seen, always smiling & helping. Peter was the embodiment of calmness - add Johan to that as well - he owned time.

Other I will add in time.

Thanks for all the smiles, laughs and most of all thank you for being our friend.

Edit: @Chantal Burger said I must thank you for turning back after your accident with the fence lines, to bring her to me in the Ugab. (y)
