Diepspoor revisited
Wild dogs will recall that the 2009 EC Regional WD Bash held in June at Vaalpadskloof near Steylerville was a wet and muddy affair, resulting that the planned outrides were never explored.
A weekend outride was subsequently planned for the weekend of the 17th of October 2009 and these routes was explored and ridden.
A 170km route through the Grootrivier Mountains and adjacent regions was planned using 1:50 000 topographic maps. The focus point was to explore the Kamferspoort, a must ride for any serious dual-sport biker. Special permission has been obtained from the landowner to gain access to the Kamferspoort. With clear skies, no wind and with a green Karoo landscape the morning's ride was to commence at 11h00 once all the participants have arrived at the camp-site.
Seeing that the ride was planned for 11h00, a few of the dogs that have arrived on Friday afternoon decided to quickly go and check out the festivities at the Rainbow Festival in Steylerville and have a brekkie at the Royal Hotel. Herms, Jman, Mr C and Sakkie arrive soon thereafter, and with 5 Grahamstown Greydogs roaring in just before 11h00. After a very quick 'consultation' the ride was to start at 12h00.
So at midday 12 bikes and 13 riders lined up for the outride to Kamferspoort and beyond. Unfortunately Gorra and TerrorSA discovered some cool beers, long lost buddies, etc, at the Royal Hotel and their outride was done in front of a big TV screen watching some game - something about a curry cup, real boring stuff when in DS heaven I think! :mwink:
The road from the camp-site to the turn-off into Kamferspoort is in itself a very nice and enjoyable ride. Lots of little drifts, twists, and turns thru majestic mountains.
The following photos set the environment of the ride:
