F650GS mudgard

I've had my F650 for a couple of years. The front half of the front mudguard broke off after riding on a rutted dirt road. I replaced it and hadn't taken the bike on the dirt till yesterday.  Same thing happened. 
Is the front mudgard snapping a problem with these bikes ?
Does anyone have any fixes for the problem ? Maybe rubber mountings or an aftermarket mudgard works better ?
What ideas are out there.
