After the trip, I go to Songo to draw money, do some shopping and put in fuel. The town is obviously closely linked with the dam and it is quite a clean and neat place. Very different to my experience elsewhere.

I came across this interesting sculpture/murial. The maintained area around it is indicative of the state of the rest of the town.

Then I head back to Ugezi Tiger Lodge along the banks of the dam.

Then it is time for a walk-about and explore the area.

The lodge area is very nice with a pub and restaurant and then some chalets hidden between the trees along the path leading to the boat mooring jetty.

The views over the dam are spectacular. The weather was great and it was very quiet and tranquil.

There is an old military set-up of some kind next to the lodge area. Not much going on and there are signs of some serious maintenance and repairs that need to be done.

The area is however still very beautiful with amazing natural appeal.

Baobabs and the first seed of the tree that I have seen.

26 July 2013 - Day 31 of my trip.

Today it is Cahorro Bassa to Chimoio. A distance of about 500 km. Then I have to decide whether I am going to continue through Mozambique or go via Zimbabwe.

I leave early before the sun has fully risen.

These last photos bring back memories. Spend a lot of time working in Tete, Songo, Cahorro Bassa area. Even stayed at the Ugezi Tiger Lodge for a while.
Nice to see the bridge is finally done. Used to wait for hours to cross. Not even talking about the trucks that ended up spending days there

Lovely area that

At first the road was quite good, then the potholes started and it became precarious where the trucks were in close proximity as they would sometimes swerve without any warning.

Songo and Cahorro Bassa......any time, but Tete, it is not for me. You still wait for a very long time to cross the bridge, mostly due to the toll gate. The queue that I passed to get to the bridge must have been a few hundred meters long. Maybe I just hit it at the wrong time.

14 people were killed in this accident, including the truck driver. The law in Mozambique, according to one of the locals, is that the wrecks are to remain at the accident scene for 6 weeks in the event of fatalities.

Some pics along the way.

When I stopped at the sign to take the photo, a cop in an unmarked car stop and sternly informed me that I was not allowed to stop there. So I apologised and got going down the same road that he had gone down. A few kilometers I encountered him again coming in the opposite direction and he waved to me............. ???
