Last weekend during a shakedown ride near Hoedspruit this happened.....an 800GS fitted with a very thick aluminium bashplate as well as a stainless steel tooltube can adrift, the rider was extremely lucky it happened at slower speeds on a dirt road, while riding in a straight line, if it had happened at high speed it could have ended in tragedy, he rode over the bashplate as it fell off.
Fitting tool tubes to bashplates is not a good idea IMO. The rubber attachments as well as the small steel mounting are designed for the weight and stress of a bashplate ONLY, not an extra +/- 2kg of stainless steel tool tube and whatever weight tools inside said tube, in this case the tools must have weighed about 3-4 kg.
This specific bike has already done a trip to Cairo, and nothing went wrong on the trip, but it happened now....and it could have been fatal...please guys, think twice before attaching lots of weight to a bashplate....
