Very Nice report  :thumleft:

I did that route in 2012, so it was nice to see all the places again. I also want to do this route again in the near future.

After reading this I decided to take a day off and go ride the Postal route. Was quite a trip for one day, from Vredenburg to Goedverwacht and up to Piket boberg. Then down Versveld pass, over Piekeniers, through Citusdal and up through the Ceder mountains to Wupperthal. From there to Biedouw and then the Postal route. Returned via Katbakkies and Middelberg pass. At the gate where the postal route starts I met a farmer and we chatted for a while. He told me that though the route is still open it is in the process to be closed. Apparently too many people get stuck on the route, get hurt, but also many go off-route and ride/drive through the rooibos tea fields. This would be a real pity because it is SUCH a beautiful and special place....

:thumleft:
Mooi ry :ricky:

awesome ride!!

Pity you didn't come say hi here at Uitspankraal, only 20 minutes down the road from the Postal route turn off in the Biedouw valley..

Next time

Hi you All

I am going to the Cederberg this summer. Just my Brother-in-law and myself. It is going to be our first trip into the unknown. We want to start small with a relaxed route, just to see what we, and our bikes, are up to. He rides a GS1200, and me on XT660R. My biggest issue for now is my fuel tank capacity, or should I say, the lack there of. We'll be staying at Kromrivier for Friday and Saturday nights, and want to do a Wupperthal-Tankwa for the Saturday. I am almost sure my tank would not make such a trip after the last fill-up was in Ceres.

I would love to do this Ou Posroete. It really looks so nice.

Any advice?

All the best.

Hi BlackWidow

Any fuel your side?

How is the Ou Posroete now for us to ride? I do not want to break my bike on my first trip.

Is there maybe another route to consider for a full day out from Wupperthal?

Cheers

Hi NewB

The route is definitely doable with your bikes. You can get petrol at Oasis and Tankwa tented camp.  You can always always bum some petrol from the 1200.

Enjoy!

Hi lj111.
Thanks for your reply. I think I'll fill up at Oasis before I take on the Ou Posroete.

Thanks for great RR.

I'll try to make RR as well, but it's gonna be my first, so should be interesting.

Hi NewB. I might be reading this in a wrong way, if so, apologies.... I would not describe the postal route as "small and relaxed". If you do not have offroad experience this route may not be a good starter, especially with a 1200.....

Hi KTMvan

Thanks for your info. I think I'll be ok on my XT. I've been riding 35+ years, but my brother in law on the GS is new to riding. He did not even ride a gravel road yet.

Could one go on route and turn around when he cannot anymore, or do you know of a better full day small round trip in Cederberg?

Many thanks

The XT is the right bike for that route yes :) there are lots of nice gravel roads in that area. A route which I enjoy when with less experienced riders is the Blinkberg pass. You can get onto this either from Op die Berg or via the Katbakkies pass from the Ceres-Calvinia road. This pass takes you past Cederberg Oasis on to Matjiesfontein. From Matjiesfontein you can either carry on past Eselbanke towards Wupperthal  (sandy and rocky in some parts) or turn west towards Sanddrift and Algeria. From Wupperthal you can go north to where the postal route starts but bypass it by going down the main Biedouw valley road (the last time I did this part was several years ago and the last part is 2spoor but easy). Alternatively you can continue north and join op with the Botterkloof road. Hope this helps

I would not recommend a 1200 GS for the postal route, Yes, people might tell you different but rather take KTMvan's advice.
Your BIL will have a tough time, keep it for later  :thumleft:

Thanks KTMvan.
I'll take your advise on this one. It sounds like you know this area well.
I'm gonna try to plot your route, but please, could I tap into your knowledge for a map if I do not come right? Please!!!!

Also thanks Sprocket Mounth. Ek gaan nou nie vir jou Bek se nie. My Ma het my nie so grootgemaak nie.
Ha Ha.....

I will put together a map over the weekend of the roads that I have done recently with descriptions, must just figure out how to post that then....

Wow...it sounds like it was an amazing trip. Would love to do it someday when I'm back in Cape Town. Definitely going to add it to my bucket list.  :)

Sorry for late reply..
