And just like that, it's over!
Months of planning - thankfully Gus shouldered the majority of the burden here, preparation, kit selection, packing - unpacking - repacking, endless pre ride banter - most of it useless, a few nuggets of info shared, taming the work beast, and here we are - already planning the next iteration.
Slightly over 2,000km ridden, scenery surpassing anything James Cameron could dream up, rode like rock stars, ate like Kings and slept like the dead, had 2 punctures, one broken gear lever, Henry ate 20 Honey balls. When do we pack for the next one?
Some takeaways for me:
- We do this far too infrequently, this is a most incredible slice of the world, exploring it with like-minded friends is priceless.
- The end of August is a great time to be in these areas, relatively cool, amazing scenery.
- The Richtersveld need time - lots of time to do justice to even the smallest selection of tracks available there.
- In these areas, satellite communication is extremely useful should things deviate from the plan.
- Carry a thermal blanket or preferably a bag you can use should you need some time to extricate yourself from wherever you are stuck.
My list of praises for this trip, my fellow riders and Gus' organisation surpass the superlatives my limited vocabulary contains.
What a Ride!
Fluit, fluit my storie is uit.
