Abu ( who we met at Mof's bash last year ,and who came with us to Loeriesfontein and Verneukpan a few weeks ago . He is so cool, he stayed at Verneukpan for 2 days on his own after we left . His bike is even more cool. :drif:

Leaaving to go to Masiphumelele. It started to rain , but fortunately it was just a short drizzle . 

Masiphumelele is a township in Cape Town, South Africa, situated between Kommetjie, Capri Village and Noordhoek.

Initially known as Site 5, the township was renamed Masiphumelele by its residents, which is a Xhosa word meaning "We will succeed".  :thumleft:

About 400-500 people first settled in the area in the 1980s. During apartheid residents were continually removed to the suburb of Khayelitsha, over 30 km away, but the numbers began to grow as apartheid began to unravel from 1990.

In 1990, about 8000 residents lived in the area, mostly in shacks, but by 2005, over 26000 people lived there, many in brick homes. In 2010, the population was estimated at 38000. Many are from the old Ciskei bantustan in the Eastern Cape.

Amenities are scarce, with an overcrowded school, no police station, and an understaffed day clinic, while it's estimated that 30-40% of the community are infected with HIV and/or TB. SHAWCO, the University of Cape Town Student's Health And Welfare Centres Organisation, runs weekly supplementary clinics from the Masiphumelele clinic.

It was a good experience not just to give some of what was sorely needed at the two creches , but also to chat with the local people .

Amazing the 2 Creches , about 40 kids in each and just one room in each little house for all the kids ,many of them raised by single working moms . Good on Cornelia and Priscilla for stepping in and fulfilling this need by opening their houses up to look after the kids .  :thumleft: :thumleft:

Big Up to Rudi -Tour from Tree Co ., Wellington who donated the trees to plant at the two creches and the guys who planted them. Rudi was telling everyone how to look after the trees.

Check out pics 5 and 6 the man with the toothbrush in his mouth had shyly asked me if he could have one of the trees so Rudi gave it to him and said he must put alll spare water on the tree incl brushing his teeth on the tree . the man was very happy with that  :thumleft:

Thanks Superten , I would love to do it again as well . Just not sure I want to go into a township again .We had that aggressive man from what looked like a drug dealer's house , I  could smell the dagga fumes and just looking at the dogs and how high the house owner was . He was also the one who hit the other man right there next to Mariette , it could easily have been someone killed there and then .

He calmed down a bit after I chatted to him . He was very aggro that we parked in front of his house blocking his gate . When I asked him if he wanted to use the car he said no , but we should have asked . I apologised and offered to move the bikes and he said no , and was then happier.

I enjoyed the day very much , but just am so aware that in any township ( even a more mild one like Mase ) things can go wrong so quickly .  I  am not scared so much for myself, but would hate it if something went wrong on a ride that I organised.

Maybe next time we can go to a children's home in a poorer area ? ( not township ) . I see the guys and gals enjoyed the interaction with the kids most of all.  Perhaps we can go to a orphanage as those kids are so in need of human touch and affection ? Or a home for autistic kids or other disabilities . I will find out where and get a planning a ride going for later in the year , what do you think ?.

We can still support the chreches in Masi by donating blankets , kiddies chairs ,tables etc . But to go in there or other townships with our bikes ? I am not too keen , what do the others think ?
