Thanks Andy and Gavin from Yamaha , that was a brilliant ride  :thumleft:, beautiful weather , lekker people, and the cannons and information was fantastic. I took loads of photos, but my camera is not talking to my pc, so will ask someone to help me , will load them later.

Thanks a lot Andy for organising this dayride, it was a beautiful day out and we were presented with fascinating stuff.

I did not grow up with any family with military background or interest, but a few things really blew my mind yesterday.

The time frame at which all the weapons were made, transported & installed. I mean we are talking about the turn of the 19th century here. Cars & trucks weren't even mass produced yet. There were no pallets & forklifts to just move around stuff.

The time it must have taken to build the structures & the bases & bunkers with the tools & skills that they had at the time. I mean, to have everything ready & working for WWI & II. When do you design the military base & dig the first soil? How long before the war did they see the **** coming before they did anything? How long must it have taken, to be built so solidly to withstand all the forces & energy of cannons, but still be hollow underneath for people to operate in? 

The fact that all the doors, protective shells & frames or structures were cast & bolted and not welded. The structure & hydraulics of the dissapearing gun required to raise & lower several tonnes of cannon within seconds, with only two little steering wheels.....in 1888, over 20 years before WWI !

The amount of maths & physics needed to actually fire those things at a determined target. No computer, no GPS. Pen & papier, pappie!

The small facts that they knew to wear cotton clothing & wooden sandalls because of static electricity in the bunkers. 

Then, the time frame of how long these weapons were used efficiently & deemed as technologically advanced enough. Some for more than 40 years. I stood out to me that military & combat gear is at the forefront of technology, even today, but what struck me is this 40 year plus lifespan of some of the artillery. Just look at the progression we had with cars after WWII, and you compare that with the russian gun that came out in WWII but was still used in the Angolan Bush War, forty years later...

...to me, it's comparible with, let's say, taking Cyril Depress & letting him enter the Dakar on a forty year old bike, and finishing in the top ten.

I'm a bit of a military history whore and I enjoyed myself immensely.

I also enjoyed all the spandex-clad female joggers in Camps Bay, but I guess that's another topic.

We were 3 bikes playing with Andy in front and came around the corner only to be greeted by a fat bike parked across the road stopping traffic. Group of Harleys, probably 20 + strong were pulling away and as everything started moving the guy at the back indicated that we are not allowed to pass, another green monstrosity which was part of their group came past and also tried blocking us. Luckily I saw Andy wasn't going to listen to them since I was already swearing inside my helmet at that stage.

They were seriously expecting us to sit behind them doing 40 so we just went for it. We got to about the 6th bike from the front when we had to stop at a stop street. The oke next to me was going mal, screaming that we weren't allowed to pass them, the chick on the back indicating to the front guys to block us. But we just carried on....

Wish i was there for this part....i'm usually very reserved when riding on tar but this gets my goat...hope y'all gave them some solid BRAAAPS!

I suspect they were tourists, they had German plates (...I think...), not local. Going to charge everybody I see sporting a Harley T-shirts with a German accent double for eggs this week.

Thanks Andy . I figured I could do that ,but I couldn't find the slot in the pc ? I even turned the pc upside down ,but there isn't a 2cm wide slot anywhere ? It's a Dell? Anyone ?
