Pack Dog
The first thing every newbie is told right after: ATGATT, is probably to stand when the going gets tough.
Now I have opted for the hard panniers instead off soft panniers which is probably more suited for offroad riding, and I have found that they take a hammering when I stand on moderate loose stuff or especially on sinkplaat roads. The moment I put a little weight on the back, the tail quite down a bit, and I get the idea that I am saving my panniers from feeling like a bouncing ball in a tuble dryer.
Obviously this is a playoff situation. Less control, but longer pannier life. Needless to say, when it gets really hairy, pannier life is not the main concern.
