With that ridiculous pandemic (I don't want to use the C word), loosing my job in 2020 and the usual time and financial constraints, my riding has not been as frequent as I would like it to be. I do feel though this a problem most of us, if not all us have. I was lucky enough to take part in the 2021 Honda Quest, which just made me want to spend even more time in the saddle. 2022 flew by not no major trips, just a few quick weekend excursions and day rides and I still managed to put some miles on the XR, but the trips were not long enough to get away from it all and have a decent break from the monotony of the daily grind.

We are not a few weeks into 2023 and it has been decided a proper trip must and will be done! My XR is more than ready and up for the task, however leave is usually the issue, and as with most of us, there are a few people and things fighting for this precious time. Family, friends, me time, other events and trips and of course the wife. This got me thinking of a way to at least try and kill a bird or two with the same stone. My envisaged route is form CPT, up the east coast into EC and to KZN, zig zagging to places and roads of interest, all the while visiting friends old and new along the way. My Dad is also turning 60 this year, exceeding the family age record for the men in our family, and this got me thinking of how lekker it would be add him into the mix. This presented me with another problem, although I have 3 bikes, the XR, a little YBR125 and an old KDX, I would need another bike for my the old man to join on. On the market place the 125 goes, and the hunt for a more adventure worthy machine begun.
I had my heart set on some like a CRF250/CRF300 size bike. The 300's are lovely, but I cant justify the price for a 300, even though I know they are worth it and that's what they go for. As the guys on here know me can attest, I am a anal with caring for my bikes, and while looking at some 250's, I was saddened by the state, even though I know mechanically they are good. I kept coming back to other small bike options further afield, looking here on the forum and sales platforms. I just could not bring myself to buying a bike sight unseen, even sending a buddy to have a look is a bit tough for me. So the search widened.

The boney looks stunning in its luggaged mode. Being a soft luggage man myself, and a minimalist in that respect, I’m very intrigued by your setup : what Givi kit is that?

And of course, very compelled by your thoughts on a trip. Get the old man on board! I’m an even older ballie myself, and I can attest to what it would mean for him.

I’m also in the EC and would be happy to suggest some options that you might not have considered before...

Cheers Ruffian, I have briefly discussed it with him and he is crazy excited. The wheels are in motion, excuse the weak pun.

The bike conundrum is sorted, more details of which I will share in the next instalment. That means soon I will be doing the route planning, and any suggestions will be appreciated.

I very much like the light weight set ups, makes the bike easier to handle and the XR's are not known for their carrying capacity (weak subframe). The saddle bag base is the Givi Canyon Base (https://www.dmd.co.za/catalogue/givi-grt721-canyon-saddle-base/) which I modified a little bit to suite my needs, and I use fairly cheap dry bags from nature hike (https://www.naturehike.co.za/products/20l-500d-marine-waterproof-bag), because the Givi or other bike specific bike bags are usually a lot more expensive. I also make use of @P.K. Nomad bags when I need to add a few more things, I can attest to their durability while being pocket friendly.

So onto bike options. As I mentioned previously, I had my heart set on a CRF250/300 kind of thing. You know, keep it in the Honda family and these bikes would also make a for great replacement for my daily commute, the YBR125. My old man not being the fittest and in the best of shape, a lighter lower bike would be preferable. But prices for bikes in general are a bit rough, and I found it tough to justify the prices against the displacement. I am not saying they are not worth it, I can just be a little cheapskate and over critical at times.

For the same price of a neat 250/300, I was presented some nice alternatives. My old man loves my XR, and kept sending links for clean examples, but as much as I love mine, and as capable as it is, it is a harsh ride, vibey, has no cush drive hub, tall, top heavy and raw. Not great for many days and miles in the saddle if your body cant take a bit of a beating. It puts a smile on my face, and you must remember, I did a lot of the western cape over two weeks on a unicycle, so comparatively speaking, the XR is like a Goldwing. So no to an XR.
I looked out for DR's, DL's, Dakar's, etc, but nothing ticked all the boxes I had in mind. Then up popped an add for a certain red bike, it was not a Honda, so I know my Quest compatriots would question my sanity, but it was Japanese, a thumper, a lot more modern and refined then my beloved XR, more forgiving suspension and a significantly lower seat. A promising prospect, now to the viewing!
I met up with the Dog after work, chatted plenty about bikes in general, looked the machine up and down, took it for a spin, had a whiskey, chatted more about bikes and finally got to business. It was simple, easy and straight forward, a price was agreed upon, hands shaken and now another step in the direction of my and my Dad's adventure was taken.

Tomorrow I will be collecting the tamed beast (its no XR ;)), and once I have it I will post a pic or two. It has most of the goodies we need for our trip, but I cant help but add a few finishing touches for which I have a little list. Soon, I will move onto the next step, and that is route (rough) planning!

And here she is, a clean, crazy low millage XT660R. There may have cheaper or "better" options out there, but I have always had a soft spot for these Yamies. I feel they are highly underrated and super versatile. It is also red, so I might be able to get away with it in the Honda circles, thankfully most of them are chilled and laid back ;)

Now for a good spit and polish, new tekkies and then run through all the oils and fluids. Then the fun can start with a good shake down and some little mods just because.

I know this is not ride planning just yet, but its all part of the process I guess.

Since the bike is a 2010 model with only 1800km on the clock, I thought it would be a good idea to go through everything. So I replaced the tires, tubes, because the bike still had the original 13 year old ones, new pads, oil, anti-freeze, brake fluid were done recently. While changing pads and adjusting the chain, I noticed the cush drive rubbers are pretty much perished, so I will be replacing those this week. Last thing I am going to do is add upper crash bars to protect the radiator and then bike wise we are ready!

Apologies for the bad quality pics

My big trip was a few years ago now. I still ride, but no more long trips for me thanks

Hey Shaun, I hear you, after Quest there was and is so much demanding time but always feel free to join us on Sundays in Parklands, I usually take teh Twin in there as well.

I'm also after a 250 / 300L , they are like hens teeth.
