Spotlight led vs Halogen / Flood vs Spot

Question:

For those that fitted spotlights,
What is the deciding factor between:
LED and Halogen and fitting floodlight vs spot light (Narrow light beam vs wide beam)
or is it better to just upgrade to HID?

Then connecting it to the current headlight wiring or separate wiring with separate on/off switch.
Any other pitfalls?
