Stainless Steel Oil Filters - Advice Needed

Sort of planning to keep my DR for a long time still so was contemplating buying a stainless steel oil filter. Personally I am not too worried about the cost saving but rather the effectiveness of the filters and the ease of not having to buy or cart filters with on a long trip. I have done a bit of research on the internet and there seem to be conflicting views on them. There seem to be the usual pros and cons. Any of you guys have advice - especially those of you that have used them on a long term basis? Pointers on how to clean them would also be appreciated.
