The first subtle suggestion came from Salty – always the tactful one:  “So, are you set on Namibia?”  Yes, I was.  “Well, then let’s start cracking!”  We all decided pretty early on that Spitzkoppe is out of the question in the time we had.  Although quite a let-down, we focused our attention on the rest of Southern Namibia – sort of “The Dummies Guide to Southern Namibia by dirt”. 
Between KabousGS and Salty, they managed to come up with some nice routes on paper.  Salty worked out a daily sheet of distance per day (gravel and the odd tar), camping spots, costs of park fees availability of fuel and stuff to see, which proved to be very useful.  Although the routes were chopped and changed the whole time, the main attractions of my initial request remained the same.

It was decided that Kobus’ bike trailer would be upgraded to carry the weight of 4 big bikes (At that stage Willem was not part of the group) and that we will leave the Saturday morning 29 August 05:00 from Fish Hoek, shoot through to Springbok, park the Fortuner and trailer. Jump on the bikes and do the 300-odd km to Norashama via Eksteensfontein and Sendelingsdrif.  Easy as pie!
We got together a month or so beforehand to sort out who takes what where Kobus suggested another route on Google Earth that looks like a river bed to Sendelingsdrif.  We decided to see how it looks like on the day.
Two weeks to D-Day, we took our bikes to Kobus to see how well the upgraded trailer will do.  Well – that was the idea.  With the first two bikes on, we all had a moment of silence – no one wanted to state the obvious:  There was no way in hell that 4 big ds bikes will be able to fit on that trailer.  Not even Kobus was able to make them fit – and he’s got some unorthodox persuasion tactics!  We decided to see if we can rent a 4 bike trailer somewhere, otherwise we will have to ride one of the bikes down. 
At that stage the early morning 600km drive to Springbok, followed by a 350km ride on unknown gravel started to look like a kuk idea.  Even to me – the optimistic one with the nice broad 1200 seat and windscreen that blocked all the wind.

Meanwhile, I took my trusty steed in for a pre-trip service, and upon collection I noticed a sputter on hard acceleration.  “****, not now!”  My first thought was ChrisL’s advice that the 1200 does not like a wash without a trip around the block.  So took her back the next morning, just, upon collection, to be told they have tested EVERYTHING. Not coils, not plugs, not injectors, not computer.  Might be dirty fuel or fuel pump, but they had not got to that yet.
I started my internet search in all earnest, starting with a thread here on WD.  One thing kept popping up – plugs.  No look – I hate it when someone steps into my chambers and tell me they Googled their problem, and that somewhere in a one-horse town in Australia a certain legal principle is followed that is the same as theirs.  It pisses me off in 5 seconds flat.  So on my return to the workshop I asked the owner to please just entertain me and replace the plugs – even if they seemed fine.  Well, long story short – the culprits were the plugs!  I swear I could’ve French-kissed him right there. True-njannies!
I ordered a long-sleeve shirt and a bandanna for each of us with our forum name and emblem on, which turned out to be very useful!  We couldn’t find a 4 bike trailer, so Abe proposed we leave the Friday after work for Springbok, sleep over and then tackle the dirt roads.  Immediately accepted by all.  Me and Chris will try and leave by 13:00 by bikes, while Abe and Kobus will sit back in the comfy leather of the Fortuner.

At this stage Willem decided to change his leave to join us, but he wanted to do it with a twist – he will leave on the Thursday to get some other gravel roads in, and then meet up with us. 

We couldn’t wait for this to start – not only for the obvious reason, but the longer we wait, the more “stuff we REALLY need on the trip” we bought.  Kobus took his 800 to SuperFoxi for progressive springs and a washable air filter, I took my bike to SuperFoxi for a progressive spring in front and a more robust one for the back, ordered a new set of Kenda Big Blocks from ChrisL (together with a Leatt 5.5 ballistic jacket) and a Sena 20S dual set. (my previous one I forgot in my pants’ pocket, so Swambo washed it… moertoe).  Abe and Chris also took their bikes to SuperFoxi for tyres and service.
We were ready.
