Seeing that Funacide is slow in posting a report, here goes:
No, it has got nothing to do with a third date.
Fun phones me on Friday, asking whether I’m keen to go to Dullstroom. Ok, cool. It’s been a long time coming. The first one we did, his bike’s tyre got a huge gash in and he had to turn back. Second time round, the honorable zonk’s bike got a puncture which could not be fixed – recall the pics of zonk’s ride on tar with a flat. ^-^
Saturday morning. The ride can only take place if I find fuel. Luckily, at the fourth petrol station I manage to fill up and hightail to Pretoria to meet fun and poppipants. After a coffee and chitchat, we scoot through Mamelodi, thereafter heading for the closest gravel. Funacide manages to take out a guinea fowl with his handguard. Ouch!
A quick ride up to Loskopdam where we fill up again and have a refreshment. (Nah, it wasn’t a shebeen run.) There used to be a tweespoor track for a couple of k’s that connected the main gravel roads and was the most fun on this route. Sadly, it has now been graded – at least some erotic spots remained.
After Stoffberg, the road becomes much more scenic. At this point in time it needs to be mentioned that Funacide was enjoying the ktm like a kid that has just found his best Christmas present! (I can think of another analogy, but we try to keep the forum 'clean'. >) He really went flying up the track!
We reach Dullstroom. It’s been a year since I’ve been there and the place has really boomed. I even miss the Duck & Trout, hidden now by commercialism.
Just outside of Dullstroom, we take the Uitvlugt turnoff. It turns out to be the piece of road for the day for me, containing a little bit of everything from rocky road, powdery sand and acceleration gravel. Whoohoo! ;D ;D ;D
A quick dart down the pass and then onto some scenic gravel again, twisting through the valleys until we reach the R555. Funacide unfortunately had to get home to attend a function, so the decision was taken to take the tar. So, it was a straight line to Middelburg, from where we took the highway home, which was pretty much like ordering a decaf coffee – no fun.
Thanks to Funacide for leading the way, it has been a very long while since I saw someone enjoying a bike that much! And meeting Poppipants, what a cool guy!
