Tks for an excellent RR. Makes me want to go back again after a 30 odd year absence. Looks like the traffic of goats and cattle not changed much.

Hi LS! Great ride report! Me and WJN are planning a similar trip up route 62 all the way up to the transkei and up to Durban. Im on my 650 X challenge and he on a 650 transalp. Would like to find out how you managed the fuel issue and permits for the transkei?? We are planning to do as many gravel roads as possible

would appreciate some advice

Thanx

Hi Rohan85,

Thanks. Fuel is plentiful, just make sure you have enough cash because garage cards aren't accepted everywhere. You can even buy fuel in plastic containers by the roadside.
You don't need permits for the Transkei. Actually there is no such place as the Transkei - it was absorbed back into the country many years ago.
You don't need to plan to do gravel roads since you wont have a choice anyway ;D ;D

enjoy. let me know if you need more info

Hi LuckyStriker, I'm the said partner in crime for the trip to Durbs.

Do you have any info for us on the route you took? I'm particularly interested in the Bastervoet section and the area around PSJ. We're pretty tight for time so we have to plan to avoid sitting on the bike constantly and never actually spending down-time at nice stops.

This will be our first long bike trip so we want to make it count!

Thanx
Willem

Maybe Rohan is referring here to permits apparently needed for some sections along the coast that are nature reserves? A member a member posting something about it recently but can't find it now. As far as I can remember he said that it is such a hassle getting those permits (one from Mthata, one from East London, I think) that he was not going to apply anymore, but just go ahead and ride.

Nice trip with good pics and a exeptional descriptive with humour way of writing. Beautifull place the e/cape transkei :thumleft:

Dis mos 'n RR die!!!  Dankie Lakkie - 'n great lees gewees.  :thumleft:

Permits must be obtained if one is traveling on certain sections on the wild coast 4x4 trail. This includes the area surrounding The Jacarada ship wreck and especially the coastal route( not die marketed road) between cob in and the Shixini River. We have a holiday cottage in this area and even though we have permission to drive on this route we still need permits to do so. NO Beach driving. These 2 areas are be heavily patrolled and it has happened where vehicle have been confiscated and impounded . NOT something you want in the Transkei. If you interested ill get you the no to call. But is is a schlep. We book our times and dates 15 of jan for the year. 4 to 5 times. And we get stopped on average half the time checking permits.

A most enjoyable RR and an interesting route.
Your photography is stunning and you certainly know how to capture the moment. South of Hole in the Wall is still a 'must do' for us. Shamwari Game Reserve also looks enticing.
Thanks for introducing some new places.
