Quick jaunt from Djordz to Herold and back. Was the guy with the 1290 at the Tollhouse a WD's inmate?

Went up to the farm in Newcastle this last week end, it was the first time my 18 year old twins were legal on bigger bikes, so the 790 was in big demand! ~It was a great week end, spectacular Kwazulu Natal summer weather despite the dire warnings of heavy rain.

Its also the first time Ive seen the Zaaihoek Dam overflowing

This past Sunday was an absolute perfect day for riding. Not much wind and a max temp of 20 deg forecasted.

With all the rain lately, I haven't ridden for quite a while, so I decided to go for a ride to nowhere. Just ride where the road takes me.
However, when I tried to start my bike, the battery was just not strong enough. I was sure that was as a result of the bike not being ridden, because I bought the battery last year in April. I jumped the bike and decided that I'll ride to town, shut it down and if it starts as it should there, all would be well.

On my way to town, the volts showed a steady 13.8 - 14.0 volts and it started up perfectly normal, after shutting it down in town. We had some rain the previous evening, so I decided to keep to the black stuff. Wasn't feeling like mud and slipping and sliding - and possibly coming off.

I took the road to Middelburg, from where I planned to ride back to Colesberg via Steynsburg, Venterstad and Gariep Dam. It was indeed a perfect ride, until I reached Middelburg...
First, the ABS malfunction light came on, but I shrugged this off as maybe a bit of debris at the sensor. A minute or so later, the MTC malfunction light came on and while figuring this one out, my bike just died. Like in completely dead, with not even a light on the dash burning.
I freed off the side of the road and there I was, next to the road, just outside Middelburg, with a dead 1190. Obviously not one tree close enough to have some shade.

I cleaned the battery terminals, hoping that it might be that, then checked all the fuses, but all was well. Called @NIMMO to get his opinion and after telling him the symptoms, his conclusion was that the battery had failed, like in completely.

Long story short:
Nimmo sent me Ajax's number, he came to pic me up with his bakkie and trailer and we went to a local restaurant for a few beers, while waiting for my wife, who had to drive with my car and bike trailer to recover me and my bike.

So, my bike didn't take me anywhere to write about. Instead, my whole day was stuffed - except for meeting @ajax and having a few beers and a nice chat.
That said, new battery order, AND a trickle charger. Once the new battery has arrived, I will attempt this ride again.

:ROFLMAO:

Jump start, koop nuwe battery in Witbank.

A story first, I arrived in New Zealand to visit my son and family for 3 months and to ride some south Island trails. Bought a good condition 2018 DR650 with soft luggage and kitted for travelling and did the first 300km when I rode it back from Murchison to Christchurch. All on tar state highway which reminded me of the backroads of Knysna area. No pics unfortunately of Lewis pass which has some nice twisties.
Next day gave the bike a good going over and all seemed well maintained. A day or two later wanted to explore around Christchurch so jumped on and as I rode out of the gate the bike cut out - forgot that carbs have a fuel tap - and put my left foot down only to find the gutter here was like the grand canyon. Caught my left leg eina sore but I picked the bike up and went on to explore that area.
Phew - my leg was paining and a week later I went to the ER to find I had broken my fibula near the top and it also had a slight crack. The doc told me that it was already healing so I must just take it easy for 2 - 3 weeks. I think we have differences of opinion in what "taking it easy" means. So riding has been on tar and good gravel roads.
But I am finding the scenery here so different - deep valleys, wide rivers, riding in the sun with snow still on high leaks, and things work like they should.

But a few pics from some rides.

Icy cold rivers and snow still on high peaks. Apparently this pass sometimes gets closed through snow in winter.

Section of trail I followed but turned back because of not wanting to fall and be in the middle of nowhere with a more damaged leg.
